Please can anyone tell me of a reputable indie garage very local to west yorks as I have a worrying knocking sound from the rear end. If anyone can advise I'll try myself.
The noise is like a knock on the rear when I accelerate and the same noise when I decelerate.
Don't think it's the prop but maybe suspension? Has anyone had a similar problem?
Not bad with spanners etc, but don't have too much knowledge on chimaeras.
Thanx.

Thanks for the promt reply guys.
If it is the diff bushes how easy is it, or should I get help from a garage? I have just got the usual tools, trolley jack/stands etc. but I don't mind cut knuckles, dirty hands and all that.

Hi P O D.
I did check the wheels and all is well. I checked the fault guide in the bible but it is too generalised, if you know what I mean. I think I'll have to have a good look underneath before I can really tell what it is but a four-poster would be better. (shame, cos I'm all out of them!)

Could be engine mounts. Once they go everything bounces around (well it did in the Griff). Sounded like the back end was about to fall off.

I'd definately go with diff bolts. Mine were loose and I got a jolt from the rear when taking up drive or switching between going forwards / backwards.

A simple application of a socket set fixed it 5 years ago, been fine since.

I had the same problem, a thump under acceleration or deceleration. It was diagnosed by a "specialist" who was confident it didn’t need further proper investigation as the diff bushes, however after more thorough consideration by a non-specialist garage with a little more diligence it turned out to be the diff mounting bracket bolts were loose. I can't recall if one of the bolts had ripped the thread or sheared now, but I was lucky that I got it sorted when I did so suggest you are careful and get it checked out sooner rather than later.

Good luck..!!

If you find somewhere closer, can you let me know

Though it is a nice drive up there and a better one if you come the long way back

The original diff bolts are too short and should be replaced with longer ones - any dealer or Indy should be able to replace them.
Have you checked the engine mounts too - they are crap in the Griff and assume same in the Chim too. Ours are shot and the whole of the rear end feels as though its falling out plus the manifold knocks on the chassis on start up from cold.

Thanks for all your replies everyone. Not working alot this week so maybe I'll get the chance to go under the car, weather permitting? Also if anyone has any advice on a intermittent temperature gauge it would be most appreciated. Mine works fine for a while and the after turning the ignition off it doesn't work at all. It then may work a couple of days later. Have looked at connctions on engine (removed and re-plugged in) but not sure as to which connector is for the gauge as there are more than one. Any advice please?
Thanks.
