Just bought a 99 450 (From here with 22k miles) which needs some attention to the rear brakes. I come from a long line of Jap racers and am a 3g and red stuff man, anyone got this setup on their Chim that could point me in the right direction part number wise. Also gonna give it a service as its been fairly dormant for the last couple of years is there a filter i can get at Halfrauds, I'm guessing 5W-40 fully synth (How much) anything else i should change or am i being a mentalist not taking it to a specialist?

Sorry lots of questions I have had a search without much luck.

Cheers

Brakes, everyone has their favourite pad/disc combo. On the racer I've 4pot alloy calipers on the front and a standard setup at the back.

Looks for mid 90's Landrover V8 oil filters, Land Rover part. Part No ERR3340, probably best to go to your local autofactors, they're cheaper and just as good quality.

The RV8 is an old design of engine and needs quite a thick oil, 10W/50 and the like are reccommended, have a look at the oil reccomendations thread in the General TVR thread.

There's nothing complicated to servicing the cars, so you don't have to rely on specialists, and most problems are well documented here on the forum.

There is far more to routine servicing than checking and replacing the obvious consumables. I suggest you get a copy of the service schedule before you decide to DIY, also consider that it takes some experience to decide whether the amount of wear/play you are getting in the various joints, bushes etc is normal or a problem, where the replacement parts come from etc. For most people, getting them serviced by a specialist is a wise investment.

Thanks guys, may well get it checked out anyway, just dont want to pay someone to do an oil change and replace disks and pads. Anyone in Bristol recommended or are the guys at culompton the closest?

Anyone know what the braking ratio between front and back is i,e, which should be watched most closely/ uprated first?

They're typically known to be rather rear biased, you hear of cars swapping ends under heavy braking cos the back end has gone light and the rears locked.

In terms of overheating, the fronts typically overheat first. They do roughly twice as much work as the rears, but they aren't twice as big. But don't just assume the fronts will cause problems, if you suspect you have heat related problems then monitor the temperatures and address any issues if/when they turn up.

Didn't want to uprate all of them if only the fronts did the braking, have had FWD before.

If you're upgrading the fronts make sure you think about the brake balance and don't just whack dustbin lids on the front.
