Hello all,

When turning the wheel my 97 4l baby makes an awful howling noise, remeniscent of a large dog with a thorn in its paw. It doesnt sound good (as if) and is fairly loud. Is there a loose belt on the PAS set up ?

Anyone able to assist ? Much appreciated in advance

Out of interest, what level should the PAS fluid be at? Mine is about 1/2 way up the dipstick on the cap.

You should be able to see an upper and a lower mark on the dipstick.

Its usually a low level that has let air get into the system, top it up and the air will work its own way out.

Bloody hell - you should be checking this weekly!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and you don't know where it is. Have you checked the oil and water recently.
You'll be badly bitten, ie huge bill, if you don't carry out regular preventative maintenance on a Tiv.

Cheers FFG, I am aware of the increased amount of maintenance over a usual japanese saloon. Standard checks such as water and oil levels are checked bi-weekly. This power steering lark is new business to me. Can you reveal the location of the reservoir ?

Any one know if you can use an alternative PAS fluid to the one specified in the hand book (Mobil 220ATF)?

Cheers

I think you'll find any Dexron II or III fluid would be fine and this is a pretty ubiquitous spec, just remember that Dexron is a specification not a brand so just look on the back of the container / label.
