Popping and banging - normal?
Discussion
I have grown to love my 4.3 but the more you drive a car the more you notice things. In my particular case the endless tunes from the exhaust, I am not technically minded but is overrun when the gear is engaged but no throttle? If so, do all TVR pop endless in this situation? Could it be a problem?
Interesting this one. The scenario you speak of is often commented on because of the lack of popping and banging. Simply put the popping and banging is a result of unburned fuel being ejected into a hot exhaust. Yes it is normal under deceleration but if you are engine braking, i.e. in gear with your foot off the accelerator then the fuel should be cut off completely preventing popping. Only when the engine RPM comes close to tickover does the fuel start flowing. Owners will sometimes leave their foot slightly on the accelerator to force unburned fuel into the exhaust to cause popping and banging. If yours is truly popping when the accelerator is fully up then something is out of adjustment but it's nothing to worry about.

Different size engines have different tone, the 4.0 is the easiest to get to pop 'n' bang the 5.0 is the hardest, but when they do, oh lordy is it loud.
My 5.0 currently has no cats, no pre cats, straight through Austec conversion and the ignition tweaked slightly for increased flaming effect.
Oh, its now just had a sports exhaust fitted for future Tunnelruns

Thank you all. I can confirm no throttle at all in the situation described. Could it have burnt valves? It is supposed to be a BV engine could that explain it?
My 5.0 has just undergone a FULL rebuild, and just before it went in for some other work it would pop and bang as you described, no throttle and very near the front of the car, worth getting checked out i reckon at the very least.

your cats are more than likely blocked, a common issue and a good excuse to get them whipped out
Pre cats or main cat...or all three???...must admit the car was running very rich for a while...as in 9mpg taking it easy...think you might be right about the cats!!!
I can feel a weekend of hammering out the pre cats!

Cobblers.
The good lady's 5.0 is no more difficult to pop and bang than my 4.5!
Tis true, a 5.0 side by side to a 4.0 out of the factory is more difficult to get to pop, dont ask me why, just ask around - i've also had this conversation with Paul at Austec and Dom at TVR power, no one can give me a definitive answer as to the reasons why though

driven quite a few RV8 cars and never noticed that... Seem to recall someone telling me the 4 had a smaller bore exhaust than the others.. how true that is I don't know...
