My 99 chim has an issue starting from hot every now and then due to a solenoid? sticking open due to engine temp. Is this a common problem and is a new SM the only cure? This has only happened twice after a long drive btw.

cheers

Yes, it's a common problem. Conventional wisdom was that the starter motor needed replacing. But there's also a (fairly convincing) school of thought that attributes the problem primarily to inadequate wiring. When the wiring is hot, its resistance is higher so there is more of a voltage drop across it, and less power for the solenoid. Combine that with the solenoid potentially being sticker when hot, and you can get the symptoms you're seeing. Modwise sell a kit that uses the existing solenoid wiring to power a relay which takes a direct feed from the battery with heavier wiring so that the solenoid gets more juice, and many say this has cured their problem.

The website is a bit of a dog's egg, but try this www.clarionservice.co.uk/id32.html

and here's a recent thread discussing it with the magic words highlighted:

well, hopefully it should be sorted now, £20 delivered bargain compared to £200 to fit a new SM!

Might as well check the other issue I have, the Hazard warning and rear fog switches dont illuminate, fuse blown?
