Shocks - easy Job? And which ones to have?
Discussion
After 8 years and 40k miles my shocks are getting a little tired and could do with changing. Thing is cash is a touch tight at the moment (so no Nitrons etc) due to the forthcoming Furball 5000 and impending purchase of new tyres.
Firstly which shocks do I go for? I'm not fussed about infinite adjustability etc. once their on and set up thats it for me. Also, do I need to replace springs at the same time? Any other bits that would need doing then as well?
How easy a job is it for a novice to do themselves in order for me to save on labour costs? I don't mind paying for a chassis set up afterwards but would prefer to do the manual stuff myself if it's not too hard a job.

I won't get involved in which shocks but would advise changing springs at the same time, well worth it IMHO especially if you go for aftermarket shocks which tend to run on 9" springs rather than the old 11" jobies.

So many threads on this all down to cost though and at the end of the day - you need to be a shit hot driver to tell the difference - If I was doing again - I'd just get a set from GAZ.
Not sure I agree with that. I say get the best you can afford, damper quality make a big difference to the car's ride quality and handling.

Not to say improving re-sale to those in the know as well..

So in that case would you consider Gaz shocks to be a good buy? Budget is unfortunately quite tight and theGaz set with springs comes in at £500.
Like podie says, its the Protechs you want
.Give Julian a call at www.track-car-solutions.co.uk .You can have a set of alloy Protechs for Gaz money, they're fabulous performers and quality, and Joo will spec them bespoke to your requirements
also you'll get a 3 year gaurantee

I'm not here to debate the Protech/Gaz debate again with the usual suspects but I would like to point out that the Nickel plated Gaz kit is £450 plus VAT and delivery, so is not the same price as Protech its actually £121 less expensive.
As for comparisons with Avo and others,I'll leave that to the people who know better.
Just done my Gaz shocks, first one was a bugger, then you learn the way and the last one took ten minutes ! Still fidling with settings and the farm drive is my limiting factor with ride height. I have to say for me absolutely great, with still more improvements when i move house, hopefully this weekend and then i can lower it a bit more. Shame i have to do the wishbones very soon, can you get "posh ones" ?

Yes, have a word with Neil/Richard at TVRCP, Richard has designed a new tubular section jobie with decent camber adjusters.
