T5 gearbox rasping noise
Discussion
Help. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this? On my '99 450 T5 'box on 25000 miles with a full complement of fully synthetic oil. I get an odd rather metallic sound which is sort of rasping and sort of hissing, worse on over-run and usually occurs when the box is cold or cool. Doesnt seem to matter which gear is selected. The problem is, it is totally unpredictable, some days i get nothing, other days its there most of the time. It makes me think of the sort of sound you might expect from a failing needle roller thrust bearing or similar. I know nothing about the internals of the T5 'box so does anyone have any comments, or do "they all do that". When it is there it is audible under load but more so when off the throttle (i dont think thats just because of the masking effect of engine noise either).
Anyone?
Anyone?

I should have said that this has actually been going on virtually ever since Ive had the car in 2003 at 13000 miles, but I get the feeling that its a bit more obvious now (tho I have of necessity been using it more in the recent cold spell than I would normally). The lubrication plate on mine recommends fully synthetic mobil products for all lubrication requirememnts. As far as oil level is concerned, the first thing I did previously was to check and double check the gearbox oil level. Otherwise the gearbox works fine with no selection problems etc.

Coul be the spigot bearing in the flywheel. Do we know if this is a proper bearing, ie needle or ball or is it a solid phospore bronze affair ????
Interesting idea, but this would only cause noise with the car stationary and the clutch disengaged, as at all other times with the clutch out the flywheel and input shaft revolve as one, with no relative movement. I dont know which type of bearing this is but would expect it to be a simple phosphor-bronze one.
