Guys Help!!£500 spent but still no further
Discussion
hi guys. got a real problem here.my chim decided to overheat on me in traffic so i pulled over straight away and called the recovery truck.
apparently after hours of trying to figure the problem out, we are no closer to the cause.it appears that when the thermostat switches over and should be powering up the fans, it gives power to the fuel pump!a direct current was put on the fans so we know they are ok. the whole loom and fuse box have been checked but no joy!
has anyone had a similar issue or does anyone know of a specialist around uxbridge ,middx?
any help would be appreciated.
thanks all.

This does sound silly - but wiggle the conectors from the fans and really squeze them together. This was why only one of mine was working properly, the standard plugs are a bit crap. This might work and is free.
BTW - what have you spent £500 on?

Sounds like the otter switch or the wiring to the fans.
Disconnect the otter switch and short out with a pair of pointed nose pliers,
ie push one point in each hole of the otter switch connector, the fans should then start.
If they do, it is the otter switch thats faulty, if they dont then I would suspect the fuses or the connectors in the middle of the chassis at the front just behind the fans.
Pull them apart and clean with WD40 or similar, even a small amount of dirt or corrosion can cause a problem
due to the high current drawn by the fans.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks guys,will try tomorrow.
PS. £500 includes new wishbones and full service.
Trouble is he has spent nearly 2 days checking all the wiring out with other mechanics also helping .
He is an old and trusted friend and is honestly stumped by this one.First time i've ever seen him struggle with a fault!

Only thing I can suggest is that the wire from the fan relay to the positive side of the otter switch must be connected to the wire from the fuel pump relay to the ECU. That doesn't sound like an obvious fault, the relays are nowhere near each other so presumably it's a cockup in the fuse box, and it doesn't sound like the sort of thing that can happen by accident. I'd question whether the symptoms you're describing are accurate. The fan wiring isn't particularly complex and I wouldn't expect any problem buzzing through the wiring.
