Alas I must ask for a little more help...

I knew I had to change/repair some wiring that had become chaffed on the chassis and started shorting. But when I got underneath the car I did not realise how bad it was.....

Anyhow these wires are to the starter motor, I have undone the wiring to the starter motor and been able to pull it up into the engine bay where it is a little easier to hack away the burnt/corroded areas. I have what looks like 4 brown wires 2 slightly thicker than the others, the two slightly thinner ones I believe go to the alternator and the two slightly thicker ones I assume go to the battery.

Now the help....according to the bible it says that the wiring for the starter motor should be 37/0.9 170Amps (37 strands 0.9mm) and the alternator feeds are 65/03 35Amps. But ALL my brown wires are 65 strands (sad but I counted them), the core looks the same just the insulation is a bit thicker on two.

1. Do I just get 65/03 35 amps for all the wiring or is there some other rating for insulation?

2. Where is the best place to buy, I live in Grays, Essex and work in Beckenham, Kent.

3. Should I solder the joins or use a block?

4. I have silicone tape which I will cover up all the wiring with, Is this enough?

Once again you help is greatly appreciated...

I suggest you replace like with like.

Vehicle Wiring Products will sell you any spec wire you want.

For a high current connection you need to strip and clean the strands, push the two cables together end on so the strands interleave, twist the strands together and then solder with a big enough iron to get the whole lot up to solder melting temperature. If the iron isn't big enough the molten solder won't flow through the joint and you will get a dry joint.

Seal each cable joint with heat shrink sleeve and then fit an abrasion resistive sleeving over the whole bundle.
