1st probem fixed, 2nd not fixed

Hello chaps
I did my 1st fix on the Chimaera (4.3) yesterday in that i cured the non-working indicators by taking the flasher relay out and reseating it. Indicators and hazard warning lights work perfectly now.
However, yesterday, several times, while driving in no partiular fashion the engine cut, almost completely. The ignition light came on and there was no power.
Once it died altogether, the other times it ticked over erraticly at approx 800rpm before coming back to life.
The time it died completely, it was in gear and when I put my foot on the gas I could hear (more) popping and banging, which leads me to think that there was still fuel going in.
After a while it seemed OK other than the occasional momentary loss of power (ie 0.5-1 second) before all was OK again.
I checked all the plug caps, leads and distributor cap. Found one of them was a little loose on the plug, but it felt like it was much worse than running on 7 cylinders.
Any ideas??
I know it could be any number of things, and I'm planning a rolling road session to set up the recently fitted Tornado chip (fitted by PO, but not set up!!). Other than this the car goes like Concorde (much quicker than the V8S which was written off by the dealer........)
Cheers

Hi Ed,
Have you tried the "old petrol cap" Mod?

Did you have a funny burning smell as well ?.
Now you come to mention it there may have been a buring smell. I thought it was just me, but my girlfriend said she could smell something also.
It wasn't very strong and I couldn't find anything that was causing it. The car was fine yesterday, did 160miles and it didn't miss a beat.
What do you think it was then Qube??
Cheers

To be honest my car suffered with it for just over a year now intermittently, the problem seemed to come and go, one day it would play up a couple of times and on other days it wouldn't happen at all, looking back thru the history the previous owner had spent hundreds of pounds on bits and pieces including a rolling road session but never cured it, i bought steve's book and firstly tried the fuel cap mod this eased it, but it was still there, so i changed the plugs to Champion eons, leads, rotor arm and distributor cap, they were still the original equipment by the looks of it leads, cap etc after 6 years , it then seemed to go but after a few days it came back again so i checked and swapped the fuel relays around, fiddled with the alarm but nothing, eventually it got to a point a few months back were it was cutting out regular, i was ready to take the car for a rolling road session to see if they could spot the problem. while on this forum i read a post about resseting the cpu by removing the computer for about 20 mins then replacing it. It WORKED no cutting out problems since and i covered 600 miles problem free.
It seems as if there was a bug or glitch in the computer memory or something.
I hope this helps ?.
