Front number plate that is.

To be fair the copper was good about it and said that he will leave it up to me to get it sorted out but there will be a note on my records

Not sure now whether to just correct it or have one ready in the boot.

Its about 2 1/2 " high and the fixing holes for a standard one are about 3" away on either side (if that makes sense).
Does look really smart and probably aids cooling in the summer.

Luckly he didn't notice my missing front indicator that I pushed in while cleaning it at the weekend!

I'm sure he only stopped me as I was about to floor it along a piece of dual carridgeway on the way to work this morning, plus there was a clapped out Sierra Cosworth in the other lane (not that I'd noticed

You should have told him you were a serial burglar on the way to a job in which case he would obviously have let you on your way in accordance with Lord Woolfe's most recent directive.

It makes you want to weep with irritation to think plod is genuinely worried about your plate being a couple of inches too small when you read about the serious stuff they can't or wnon't do anything about.

One thing he told me is that I could go to court over it (seemed a bit drastic) and that as I have a cherished number plate they would take it off me!

Anybody else heard of this happening?

Yes. And having the full size in the boot may just compromise the situation. So sir knew the plate was illegal. As for the cooling excuse... why sir all the other TVRs I have stopped haven't had the smaller plate....

Sadly it is illegal, similar rule to number spacing / dodgy fonts etc. Anything that obscures the plate (in the eyes of the law).

Shame really, because I would agree with the cooling effect, since mine fell of over the summer when I was out for the day and the temp was consistantly lower.

Agreed, sad state of affairs when the fuzz is more interested in nicking people for poncy reg plate rather than nicking muggers and buggerers!!

Registration Mark Failing to Conform to Regulations : Summons -> Court -> Fine. There are no defences as far as I am aware that would fit your circumstances. The same goes for fancy lettering and/or altered spacings. Personally the alteration of plates really bugs me.. it is not at all helpful when trying to deal with Road Traffic Incidents such as reports of dangerous driving where the vehicle hasn't beeen stopped, merely seen by a member of the public, in addition to the cases of Failing To Stop Road Traffic Accidents, where we rely on witness statements. It's of little use to describe the registration number as small and couldn't read the reg number... As for having a full size plate in the boot, catching you with a non-conforming plate and finding a full size replacement in the boot would make proving the offence at court pretty easy.

Edited to respond:
as for the post from fatsteve, well I'll choose not to respond to such original commentary.

Would it not be possible to say you're on the way to a friend's house - he's going to help you get the old plate off and put the new one on because you don't have a drill or something?? Just curious.

Ha ha ha, yes good idea, flawed in that not all of us are as foolish as we look.

If it were only that simple....the size of the plate has to conform as well as the character sizing and spacing. Why do you think there are regulations about this sort of thing ? It's certainly not been legislated to provide amusement that's for sure.

My, my, we are a bit tetchy, given the current nanny state (re burglary and other 'less important' crimes), do you expect any thing other than the occassional flippant remark. For god's sake lighten up!

I agree in prinicple with the restrictions on reg plates, since they are there to serve a purpose.

I think they should forget about going down to Iraq. They should get the Army and Navy to guard Gatsos and stop all people with number plates that are not 100% correct and shoot them.

Feel better now, apparently there is a two strikes and you are out rule about this. If you get nicked twice on the same plate they take it off you and charge you to re-register the car.

Sorry I forget now, who was it that sold all these number plates making vast somes of money knowing full well people would muck about with most of them?

Well just measured mine! Seems that yours is slimmer than mine and longer

Actual size of mine is 430mm long by 80mm high. (17" X 3 1/8")
Fixing hole centres are 420mm (16 1/2").
So how does that compare with yours? does this mean I' m liable to get pulled (oooh, change the subject quick)

BTW Come on guys and girls, lets lighten up on this one.

We all know the RULES are there for a reason and shouldn't be broken, bend them slightly now that's a different proposition. Most of us bend the rules occasionally (speed limits), otherwise what's the point of owning a Tiv!

So does anybody know what the minimum legal size should be? or point me in the right direction to find out.
I've only had my Chim for a three months, got it from Fernies. Plates came with the car, are they legal or not you tell me.

Big Al.

the old chestnut "Why aren't you chasing burglars rather than stopping me, officer?"

now has an answer;
"there's no point any more, sir."
