Ever since I have had the car the trip meter, speedo and odometer have all worked (apart from a worrying jam on the odometer at 29999, which cleared after a few miles). However, the trip reset button has never worked. You can hold it and it moves in an out about a few milimeters quite freely and will rotate with no resistance at all. I assume that it is supposed to reset with a push, but when you push it is just solid and it does not reset.

Anyone any ideas on if this is a simple mend or a remove and send away job?

If it is it is not really important, but just thought I would ask.

I'm assuming from your profile that it has a mechanical counter?

When you press the reset, does it go back to zero then not move? Or doesn't it go back to zero?

It is a mechanical counter and when you press the reset it does nothing at all. It continues to read the miles but won't reset to zero.

Ok, I've just checked mine out. It is a 1999 car, but I think the speedo is the same.

The button only has a travel of around 5mm. It starts to tumble all the drums within the first 2mm of travel, irrespective of what each drum is reading. The button seems to be spring-loaded.

The reset is obviously mechanical rather than electrical, so if you're mechanically minded I'd take it apart. I wouldn't be surprised if you could fix it with the application of some sewing machine oil. Of course, you'd have to take the dash top off before you could remove the speedo, so it might become a whole weekend job......
