'M' reg 4.0 litre Chim, 47,000 miles.

The speedo simply failed to move when I drove off the other morning and has remained dead since. No speed, no trip meter.

Are these more prone to be one kind of failure than the other (sensor or speedo)?

they often fail at a 10,000 mark eg 10K, 20K etc.... But if it exactly 47K then it will be the actual speedo. Try a few things
1) Stick car in reverse and try a longish backwards drive (10s of meters not miles!)
2) LEave it for a while and it might come back to life

But with no speedo as well I'd be considering the transducer - you'll need a ramp

Sounds like the transducer to me.
Depending on year it could be on the input shaft to the diff or as mine is one the off side half shaft.
Looks like a large bolt made of brass, threaded along it's length and has two wires comming out of the opposite
end to the toothed wheel that it gets its pulses fron and hence your speed.
They cost about £40 from TVR.
But before taking the plunge and changing the sensor, check that your brake lights and reversing lights are working
as the speedo is fused from one of these two cicuits.
Hope this helps, I replaced mine about 3 weeks ago fairly easy to do but zorst gets in the way a bit.
Cheers,
Paul.
