Hi folks,
How do you properly announce the Chimaera? I have heard several owners all having different sayings, please tell me which one.
1.Kimera,
2, Schimera,
3, Kymera,
I've tried to spell it as close to the sound as possible and please add any others as you see fit.

Best regards,

James Sim.

www.m-w.com/dictionary/chimaera

The webpage has a speaker clicky thing that will say the word, albeit in an American accent, but the pronunciation is correct.

roop and tvrbob both have one of the two correct pronunciations (according to Chambers, who also list an alternative spelling 'chimera'). Their other pronunciation is ki (as in kit) me ra (as in camera).

And I pronounce it kimmayerer.

Thanks guys,
As I said so many differant versions have I heard in the past I wanted it cleared up, I am going to the Le Mans Classic and will be outnumbered 3-1 with the people I am going with so I've got to be PC in my discussions with them, as we share the same beer, BBQ & billet, kidding really as they are a good bunch.

That's odd, my Chambers (and the OED) shows the two pronunciations as:
ky-mear-ra or ki-mear-ra (the last two syllables being the same)

Kye-MEER-uh ('Kye' as in 'cry' or 'rye')

I've heard people say shim-AIR-uh ('shim' and in 'shin' or 'shimmer') which is just plain wrong and wanky.
I've also heard chim-uh-ruh ('chim' as in 'chimp') and chim-AIR-uh, which aren't much better.

I suppose KYE-muh-ruh could be correct too, but I don't hear that as often as kye-MEER-uh

Edit: Also heard the 'chim' pronounced like 'kim' too.

I told my wife I wanted a "Chimaera" this last Christmas. I could hardly contain my excitement on Christmas day as she took me out to the garage and showed me my Christmas present...a "Chiminea". Yes a bl**dy Mexican pot that you put in the garden and cook sauages in.

Well she thought it was funny anyway.

(Finally got my Chimp in February and realised that it too also gets hot enough to cook sausages in)

Its pronounced kim-airer.......... if the "aera" was pronounced "eara" Saab would have an Earadeck and there would be a strange sounding bar of chocolate around .... Also nicknamed Chymy and lest politely Chymp. ( C11YMP is for sale at reg transfers out of interest if anyone REALLY feels their Chimaera is a chymp.!!!!)
Regards, Steve.

So 'Chimaera' means'unrealisable dream' or 'she-goat'.... I guess that is quite apt, mine behaved all over the winter but has started misfiring now the sun has come out, both descriptions kinda fit !

Yes , thats the sound a decent motor makes, not one that you have to get your mates to follow just in case it breaks down

I'm glad this subject has come up cos I've had mine for nearly 2 years and I still have'nt got a clue what its called. I keep changing the name every time I discuss the cars with someone and hear a different pronunciation. Mind you, I'm still none the wiser after this thread????
