What are the parameters in order for a car to classed as a classic - in insurers eyes?

They normally apply a '10 year old' rule (Footman James did on my old Griffith) but some extend this to include cars as young as 8 years. I'm with Herritage on a late 1996 car and i've got a classic type policy. Best off giving a few people a call.

Some companies also recognise modern TVR's as classic / collector cars. As long as they are second use, limited mileage vehicles, some will insure 2006 vehicles as collector cars on vastly reduced rates.

One or more of the following:

second car
garaged
limited miles
over 10/15/20/25 years (depending on insurer)
club membership (I've tried "I'm a member of Pistonheads" - but it didn't wash!!)
