My Chimp 500 96/7 let me down for the first time last night typically in the middle of nowhere at midnight. After a push start it transpires teh starter motor has failed.

What are the options for this ? are they worth repairing, exchanging, buy new. I can see its hidden away so is it an easy DIY job or a specialist repair ? Typical costs? Best source of replacement ie TVR or coomon LR part ? Does a replacement come with a solonoid?

If anyone has been along this route recently or can offer technical advice I would appreciate your wisdom.

Check all the connections before you spend your money on a replacement

If merely the pre-engager is stuck, that can be remedied DIY with the remove and lube technique. (oh and a gentle will get you going in the meantime)

My starter motor is giving me grief too. There is a loud clicking when I try to start the car - seems to be coming from the starter motor. After several attempts it usually starts - but today it took about 15 mins and a lot of swearing! Could it be the pre engager you refer to?
