I have a 94 Chimaera 400, which i've had for since October, and have a question about tyres and their profiles.

My car has 205/55ZR15 FULDA's on the front and 225/50ZR16 FULDA's on the rear.

Yesterday I had fitted a pair of Bridgestone S02's on the rear, 225/55ZR16 as per the handbook, as the others have worn prematurly .

However I notice from several other threads and websites that the 55 front and 50 rear profile is the norm, going against the handbook.

So my question is, why lower the profile and what advantages does it offer?

Not sure, mine has 245's (45 profile - i think) on the back and 205's on the front.

I know that the wider the tyre you have, the lower the profile has to be to keep the overall diameter the same (as the tyre profile size (in mm) is worked out as a percentage (45% or 50% etc) of the tyre width (225mm, 245mm))

But i can't see the advantage of changing the profile size and keeping the width the same, as you end up with a larger or smaller overall diameter tyre.

The Chimaera and Griff have had about 10 different tyre combos and the addition of PAS make a difference. I run on my PAS Griff 225/50/15 front and245/45/16 on the back which was the standard sizes to be fittted to the later cars. Lower profiles stiffen the sidewall and improve the handling at the expence of harsher ride, tramlining etc.
