I think my alternator is on the way out

While it still charges the car apprently withough fault, tt makes a whining noise which I've been reliably informed means the bearings are going.

So, sadly no 100A cheap fuse fix here.

While it drives very well, the noise is driving me mad!

So, I've been looking around for a new or reconditioned alternator. It looks like a second hand one is about 80 quid, or a new one is about 150 quid. http://shop.mastora.com/product.php?p This place has LandRover ones for 125 inc VAT.
Wood Auto also has alternators- but both www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=ALT12020 and www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=ALT12026 seem to fit the bill!

I know it's a Marelli (ie Lucas) A127M-100A, which is similar/same as a Land Rover AMR 4247. But the more I research it, the more confused I get about fittings &c. I have a 1997 Chimaera (newer shape) 5-litre, with PAS and air-con.

I would take it in to a garage, but the closest one is over an hour away and I want to fit something myself for a change- it doesn't look hard to do. I have a couple of engineering degrees so don't feel too daunted.

Can anyone tell me if that link will be the one I want? Failing that, where can I get an alternator that will fit and work? Should I be looking at reconditioned ones?

Thanks in advance!

Personally would not bother with flee bay.
Look in yellow pages for LUCAS agent or other electrical retailer in your neck of the woods.
Take you alternator to them to make sure you get the right one in exchange. Its a standard item.
Works out alot cheaper than buying out right.
Will also come with warranty too
Cheers
Paul.

I've found this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RANGE-ROVER-DIS but I don't think it's the seller you're talking about. I have a few hours spare this weekend so would really like to get it sorted out! Can you supply a link/name of the person selling them?

If you're sure they're the right ones, that's great!

I see you bought one too- I've also bought one now. Should be fitting it at the weekend, assuming it comes in time. Better go and find a spanner. BTW, there are some useful tips about fitting it at www.fag.hiof.no/~frodehaa/alternator.htm

Thanks for everyone's help!

WOO HOO.
Just fitted replacement alternator and problem solved....
NO more pulsing lights and voltmeter holding steady at just over 14 volts.

The engine seems a lot happier and not so choppy off choke, nice and smooth.

Hope yours is the same Giles..

Yippee I'm made up..

Glad to hear yours worked well- jolly good service for Ebay.

I've unscrewed the old one now (some of those nuts are rather fiddly!) but sadly ran out of time at the weekend as I had to nip back up to town. (The beast is kept in the country).

Did you disconnect the battery? I'm a bit nervous of what could go wrong if I pull the terminals off the battery (ECU? alarm?) but then the thought of zapped by the big wire to the alternator is quite bad.

All the guides say to take the battery off, but I don't know the effect and b) I'm 6'5" and it's in a really fiddly location!

Will be able to get back out there to finish off the job in 3 weeks.
