Hi
Can anyone tell what would be involved in replacing a std 4.0 V8 with a 4.6 V8
Is it a straight swap or is there more to it?
Will all my 4.0ltr parts fit the 4.6? i.e. manifolds, clutch, loom etc, or will I need all matching 4.6 parts aswell
Will it m8 up to my org g/box, or is there any diffos there?
Is it physically the same size engine with all the mounting points in the same place?
Appreciate any advice
Cheers

I have a 4.6 from a 2001 Range in mine, it is all pretty staightforward, gearbox manifolds etc, go straight on. Remember the spigot bearing if your donor is out of an auto. I also used 4.0 pistons which have less of a dish in the top for more comp, lightened the flywheel, hairy cam, shortened trumpets, and had bigger valves installed while i was there!
Fuelling may need altering to suit.
But you may aswell cam it while it is out, the standard cam will be very tame.

Ditto, as above... 'tis the way to go, especially if the 4.6 is a cross-bolted jobbie with top-hat liners etc

I am talking straight swap tho
1996 4.0 tvr out and replace with a 4.6 tvr unit (from a 99 Chimaera)
I assume all the above is the same
Do I keep all my 4.0 parts inc ignition, dizzy, ecu etc or will I need all the 4.6 parts?
It's all the same?

The ECU chip might need to be changed for optimum running although it should run in a civilised enough manner on the 4 litre maps (maybe best not to cane it until the fuelling can be checked out). Assuming the two motors are sepentines then everything else should go pretty well straight on and work. I might be inclined to check the origins of the new motor 'though... I don't think 4.6 was a Chim variant (although I have a dim and perhaps inaccurate memory that the 4.5 was 'really' just a 4.6?) Someone will know for sure.

You might want to look at beefing up the brakes as there are differences in rotor size between cpacities, 'though all the stock set ups can be made to work well if in good order with decent pads etc.

Are you talking about a 3.9 intermediate engine with a dizzy which you want to replace with a 4.6 cross bolted jobbie?

Appreciate the advive
But im a little confused now
I've found out it's not quite a 4.6, so my gaff there but…
The specs sheets I see on the net list a 4.5 as 4495cc
This engine in a 99 car is listed as a 4546cc
Both are the RV8

Where am I going wrong? Is there more then one 4.5 RV8 ?

4.6 engines are cross bolted, this means that the main bearing caps are bolted cross ways across the block, aswell as the conventional way. This can be seen easily from the outside of the block. I'm sure someone will correct me if i am wrong, but i dont believe any TVR came with this block in. Mine for instance is Range sourced.

Lots of TVR engines use the cross boltable block, but I believe that TVR didn't actually cross bolt the engines as standard.

Ahh the TVR myth go on, my 450 is crossbolted I thought it was standard on 450's

Seeing as the RV8 block was x bolted from about 95 onwards, I would assume that most engines after that are, unless TVR had some old stock.

Anynody got an intermediate front cover going spare?
No? , oh go on.

Mine too, and I'm pretty certain it happened at the factory.

When I was seeking insurance quotes, the 4495cc (I think) figure kept cropping up, but my V5c document says 4546cc.

You need to sort out some facts here. A 4.0 and 4.6 will have the crossbolts along the side of the block. If the 4.0 doesn't have them then it could be any capacity. The establishment of cross bolting is fairly important when it comes to swopping over parts.

Just to further confuse things (perhaps), my original (TVR) 4litre (from a 97 Chimaera) was cross-boltable but had not been done as standard. I now have a 4.6 from V8D (via Offords) and this was installed with my ancillaries. I don't recall any 'this doesn't fit/work' dramas and the result is pleasing to say the least in performance terms.

It would have been an intermediate engine, a 3.9 small journal crankshaft and early spec rods, pistons etc. Your new engine is way better then your old engine. Some of the late 3.9's had the bosses for crossbolting but never had the bolts put in if you get what I mean.

All the V8,s were bought in direct from LandRover then power did there own work before fitting.

Yes, but that wouldn't include crossbolting because the late 3.9 blocks whilst having bosses on the side of the blocks didn't have the caps to receive a cross bolts. In other words tvr just bought in stock blocks and fitted modded heads onto a lot of them.

Strange that
When I asked TVR Power, I was told the 4.0ltr wasn’t a cross bolted block as std in a chimp
The reason I asked then, was I had seen (just bought a 4.0ltr unit) three 4.0 chimps 96 – 99 and none had cross bolted blocks.

I'm not sure I understand your post but maybe they were 3.9's but bigged up as 4.0's. There's a big difference between a true 4.0/4.6 and a 3.9. Don't forget that the 3.9 and 4.0 share the same capacity even though they are truly different motors internally.
