It seems that I can only get hot or very hot air from any of the vents in my chim. Is this normal? Where does the air get sucked in from the outside? and does it always pass through the heater matrix?

They all do that sir. Think of the benefits... how many other cars serve as a mobile sauna?

It is curable but its a bit difficult to explain.

You need to make sure the valve in the heater circuit is moving full travel to shut off the flow.

You'll find it under the dash on the passengers side just above and behind the air vent.

Put the heater control, on the dash, to fully cold position.

Locate the valve and unclip the cable (be careful not to lose the clip).

Push the little lever that the cable inner is connected to as far as it will go in that same direction that it already is (i.e. away from the cable outer and the clip you've just removed)

Hold the lever in this position and replace the clip.

Beware you need to be fairly flexible to get your body and hands in the right position to do this but its worth it afterwards.

Bah and hurumph... aircon indeed.

Problem with aircon is that combined with a bad dose of heavyrightfootedness it means you're filling up every 100 miles!

mmmmmmm! probably the best option any convertible can have is air con or climate, simply putting the roof down with bakeing sun out and engine heat turns into a miserable drive out even when queing at the slightest of jams, i've put the roof up before and stuck air con on becuase it was to hot unfortunatley for me mine does not have air con just the warm and warmer heater.

As much as I love driving with the roof off I would be lying if I said I didnt miss climate control. Its fine once moving but as we know stuck in traffic jams in the baking sun does get a little uncomfortable! The vents just pump out varying degrees of warm!

Still a very minor niggle though and theres more than enough grin factor to make up for the extra sweating!

2 years ago en route to Le Mans we had heavy rain in Caen, so luggage out /roof on/ luggage back in. Traffic jam approaching Le Mans weather warming up nicely, can't be arsed to do luggage/ roof thing again so open windows, inrush of superheated air straight from bonnet vents. I think they were designed on the premise that England is always cold. Anyway have you tried the funny little vent down by your right knee, thats sometimes cool..ish.

Totally agree - get the car working PROPERLY first - don't waste money on Air Con. Mine blows a stream of cool air out even in traffic.

I'm just trying to follow this, and have a couple of questions:

- Is the "clip" the silver looking thing just where the cable joins the lever? If so, how the heck do you get it off??!

- I don't fully understand (Probably as I've not been able to follow it all the way) But how does removing the clip and moving the cable-outer help as surely this wont affect the cable inner? In my case, the cable inner doesn't appear to be pushing the lever all the way needed so I'm sure your fix is what I'm after. But my situation mean that I need more travel on the cable inner?

Either way, I'll keep having a go!

Thanks

Personally I'm bloody glad mines got it, especially as I didn't have to pay the 2k extra for it when the car was new!!
Can't say I notice it using that much more fuel really but I don't really look at the consumption that closely.
The standard aircon includes a fuel cooler which might offset it slightly??

Hi Nick,

The clip i'm referring to holds the cable outer in place while the cable inner pushes and pulls the lever when you rotate the temp control on the dash. The cable inner has a limited amount of travel so you need to move the outer (which moves the inner as well) towards the lever to push it further, effectively making the inner a bit longer as you described above.

My apology's if my description is hard to follow. Good luck, keep trying you will get there.

In my early Chim (93) the right-hand vent is fed from the right hand wing void - i.e. NOT via the heater matrix - Good in Summer but can get v cold rest of year !!
