Fans - 40A fuse question
Discussion
I noticed my car got hot but the fans didnt come on. I have an override switch on mine, and even pressing that did not turn the fans on.
Checking the fuses, the 40A fuse that according to the Bible is wired to the fans and the Horn (which also doesnt work) was not only blown, it was almost obliterated! I'm talking meltdown. I had to remove the remnants with pliars, including both of the blades separately...
Is that normal for a blown fuse? Seems a bit extreme...

Hi Sharky,
sorry to hear about your fuse box meltdown.
What you must remember is that a 40amp fuse can sustain considerably more than 40amps before it blows.
Sounds to me like the fans may be a bit tight and need lubricating.
If they are a bit tight they may draw slightly more than 40amps which may have been enough to
melt the fuse box before the fuse finally failed.
Stick a screw driver through the fan guard and push each fan round and make sure they spin freely.
If they are a bit tight its a fairly easy job to strip down and clean.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers,
Paul.

Sharky- you did the right thing (obviously) in checking the 40amp fuse but, most fan-stoppage problems on V8 TVRs are caused by corroded spades in the plastic connectors found on the engine side of the fans.
They generally sit on the sill that holds the fans and can therefore be prone to water ingress.
Gently pull apart the connectors then scrape/buff the copper plates until shining.
Two weeks ago I had the same problem..

FWIW I had a similar case with my '99 Chim which has two 25A (I think) fuses instead of the one 40A. Apparently it's not uncommon for the fuse contacts to get dirty over time causing a poor connection. Subsequently the thing overheated and literally melted - taking out the fuse panel at the same time.
Maybe pulling and reinserting fuses to clean the contacts annually is something else to add to the list?
