Hi All,

just bought my 3rd TVR... beautiful 500 in imperial blue after a good two years away, so chuffed at the moment...

to the point.. it has the offords cherry bomb exhaust conversion on it which i am looking to change back to the original, as its a touch too loud for the girlfriend whi , unfortuantely has nerve damage in her ear so its actually hurts her to drive in the car..

have obviously thought of changing her for one with a better service history, but all in all, that would probably cost more than simply changing back the exhaust.

anyway, the point..

is any one interested in a straight swop with a standard exhaust for my cherry bomb converted one?

rather do that than pay offords to undo all their good work..and it really does sound good..

anyone interested , let me know.

Steve.

me me me ! Assuming the zorst from a 450 will fit a 500 and vice versa - Im sure I read somewhere that they are the same.

Have been considering bombs for some time. Of course the problem being Im no mechanic and wouldnt be able to do the work myself.

I'm near silverstone, any good ?

mail me through my profile.

Cheers

not sure if you can just take the box with the cherry bombs out and swap them over ( which would be the best option)or if you need to do the whole system..

i'm in devon, so not a million miles away..

i'll have a check and see if the systems are the same..

Just looking at the bible, seems straightforward to take the whole system off and do a straight swap. If you have the car up on ramps..... I wouldnt for a minute look at swapping just the modified bit, it would need to be the whole system from the point where it joins the manifold.

Perhaps we can offer some beer tokens to someone who's handy with the spanners ....

anyone around half way between brumingham and devon who has a access to a ramp.....

failing that which every specialist is in the middle could probably swap them over in an hour or so i would have thought...

just need to make sure both exhausts are in a similar condition...mines pretty good all the way through..and as you said as long as they are the same systems...

IIRC all the Chim exhaust are the same. The cherry bomb exhaust is a full switch, the whole system from the Y piece backwards. I have just fitted mine this weekend, asde from the logistical problems of fitting it at home with the car on axel stands, it was very easy, I also took the oppourtunity to pu loads of underseal on the chassis.

I fitted a system from ACT, it's worth giving them a call as it sounds awesome!!

You beat me to the post by about an hour - Discovered this morning that my P&J has got a few issues and shes going to be off the road for a bit til shes been to the Chim Doctor. Im gutted I would surely have loved the bombs but mechanicals have to take precedence. At least the weather has taken a turn for the worse and I managed to get some quality topless fun in last week !

Im sure someone will come along soon and make you a good offer !

Are you sorted with the swop.
May be interested even though you're miles away from Yorkshire.
I have a 4.0 1996 with standard exhaust.

Regards

I've got cherries with no cats at all (ACT 'Y' piece) and it is very loud. Can't imagine what a straight through or sleeved system would be like...still in two minds whether to try quietening it down a tad, 'though peeps keep trying to talk me out of it

Pardon my numptiness, but what exactly is a cherry bomb conversion? My recollection from my 70's custom car days is that it's a straight through silencer, perforated tube with aborsorbtion material round it. If that's the case, why is it any different from a standard Chim exhaust?

it is awesome, I have had it on my chim for nearly 4 years old, gets better with age and I LOVE it, its all about the noise. (I drove it to Le mans and back and still love it)

Wow the 70's they had things like that way back then??!!

A cherry bomb conversion is where instead of the main slicencing box, which consists of 2 perorated pipes running through a Oval box with silencing wadding around it, you get 2 smaller "cherry bombs". These are generally 3" in diameter round each pipe and shorter than the standard silencer. IIRC all the Chim and Griff systems are straight through. Most of the Sports conversions either mean removing the perforated pipes in favour of solid pipes, or removing the wadding from the silenceing box, or in extreme cases both. Because the cherry bomb system does not have the same volume and shape of the standard silencer it changes the sound of the car. If you wanted extreme silencing you could have solid pipes within a cherry bomb system, but this would be tantamount to having no silencing at all, and you would pretty much have to have it made bespoke.

I have the ACT Sports Manifolds, with ACT Y piece and the ACT Cherry Bomb System on my Pre Cat Griff and it is loud!!

Aha, as I thought. So a cherry bomb conversion differs from the original only by the volume of sound insulation. Mine has been sleeved, presumably with unperforated pipes, in which case the rest of the silencer does naff all and it is effectively unsilenced. Minty.

Roo, nice to hear you are up and running again.
