Mod-wise Fan Controller Settings
Discussion
I've finally got around to installing the mod-wise 2-speed fan controller. I haven't had any cooling problems as yet but I've got some European trips coming up so I've installed it for the extra control and piece of mind.
Anyway, just a couple of questions:
1) What temperature settings should I use? The probes are attached to the metal part of the radiator outlet hose. Currently they're on 75 deg (1/2 speed) and 85 (full speed). Any experiences to share?
2) Where should I mount the controller? At the moment it's zip-tied onto the chassis where the VIN number is stamped but I'm worried about the heat from the manifold.
As always I've documented the install (with pics) on TVR Chimaera Pages so I want to be sure that I've got it right!
Thanks guys,
Alex

Hi, the installation was very easy. The hardest part was working out how to mount the relay and control box.
I can't remember how much it was as I purchased the kit last year. There are three options of which mine is the middle. I think the basic model just has one probe for the half-speed fans and uses the otter for high speed. The top level kit can keep the fans going without the ignition.
Email David at mod-wise, he's very helpful.

Very easy to fit, I have done it to both a Chimaera and Griffith with no problems, the Chimaera is slighty more tricky in that there is no easy location to mount the control box.
The hardest part of the whole install is wiring up the constant live to the starter motor, not difficult just a pain having the jack the car up etc and run the cable. This feed keeps the fans on after the ignition is switched off until temps cool, this is the main reason I bought the kit as I am sure this will help prevent cooking the starter motor and coil.
I tend to leave the red setting to just cut in before the otter (so the otter is therefore now a failsafe) but vary the green in ambient temperture - i.e at the moment I have it set quite low just to shift a bit of under bonnet heat but in the autumn and spring move it to within 5 degrees of the red. Not sure if it makes any difference but makes me feel better

Where did you put the controller on the Chim? Do you think it'll be okay on the VIN number cross-member?
I originally put it on top the cross member but Dave Beer said the dials might melt as they were so close to the manifold. Eventually I cabled tied it to the front side of the cross member so it was just that little bit futher away - though I then had visions of the cable ties melting and it falling off - but it never did.

I have mine mounted on the top of the cross member and got round the heat problem by enclosing most of the unit in heat shield - so far no problems.

I stuck some self-adhesive velcro on top of the fibreglass 'panel' in front of the radiator (where the bonnet hinge is fitted - there's plenty of clearance when the bonnet's closed).
Fixed the other part of the velcro pad to the controller unit - no probs at all.
It keeps cool and dry, and can be removed and adjusted if necessary quite easily.
The relay was not so easy - I tie-wrapped it between the fans in the end.
