Im looking to make my chim 400 run a lot smoother under 2000 rpm. Would getting it re-mapped and a mark adams chip be the best way? or is there another way

Check out the basics to start with. Dizzy cap, rotor arm coil plug leads etc. There's no reason that a standard 400 in good health should run rough at low revs.

Pop over to TCS- www.track-car-solutions.co.uk and see what Julian can do,he's good with the rover v8's.A MA chip costs a heck of a lot of dosh, when a good rolling road session at a good specialist like Joo should see your problem sorted, for much less cash.

Thanks lads, ive done all the basics, leads, plugs, dizzy cap. Ive heard a MA will set me back £500 to £700 i know its a hell of a lot, but if its just a one off and sorts it out, it would be worth it. but on the other hand if getting it on a rolling road does the same job.
Its just a fear of having to do it over and over again.

Do you have an uprated cam? If so, this may mean a little less 'driveability' at the low end...

What you get for your money with Mark is an in depth analysis of your engines health. The lot. I would go for it if you are keeping the car as every engine is different and you will get the fine tuning you require to give peace of mind.
If you are experiencing driveline shunt then it won't help much though

if your car is an HC model they tend to hunt under 2k anyway, just a thought.solution keep revs over 2.5k some hunt more than others.can,t comment on stock 4.0 can,t see why it would be a problem unless your timing is over advanced that will make car lurch & hunt at low revs.

again thanks lads for all your help. Yes Nuggs it is an uprated cam 250 bhp. Ive been to see Joo at TCS today and we have it running a lot better, 235 bhp on rollong road ( very happy with that as we thought it would be about 215 ) but lumpiness is still there, but its now hard to feel it, so im a happy boy now !

Told you he'd sort it,Mustard is our Julian.Unfortunately with some of the more performance cams and set ups,to some degree you have to put up with a little lumpiness down the bottom end, especially if you want the maximum power at the top,as others have said.It sounds like you have the power and much sweeter bottom end running now, which is great.
p.s. thats very nice figures for a 4.0l car

Yup .. nice to see you

I was struggling to remember what the spec of the 4litre 250 variant was .. is it different cam or head work? .. whichever it is it seems to work .. a solid 15+bhp more than my V8S is nice

Nopies Mike it's pre HC cars .. it was a cost upgrade on the earlier 4 litre chims and griffs .. the plenum has the sticker 400 250 ie a 4litre which TVR rated at 250bhp, ie an upgrade over the 240 std car. But i can't recall what the differences were, though clearly there were some as this has great power for a factory 4 litre

That's interesting,i didn't realise they did a '250' variant,certainly never seen one.As you say,very good figures,you would expect a few things to have been done i guess?Compression,cam,head work etc?

I've a friend who's just got a 4.0 precat with 250 on the plenum. The original build sheet has "gas flowed heads" on it as a £800 ish extra. That's one difference for starters anyway

Yes they produced quite a few 250's , mainly on Griffs the Chimaera variant is rarer.

Ported heads, stock TVR51 cam possibly a tad higher comp to standard & balanced they are very sweet engines.

Friend got Griff, I should have mentioned that above.

Hi all, I own a 4.0HC with 24K on the clock. I have just had the cam changed to a Piper 285 on advice from my local engineer. The pre-cats were removed at the same time. They set it up on their rolling road post the cam change and said everything was good, but it was not mapped. My problem is the shunting below 2000rpm makes it a pain to drive. Earlier in this thread Apache said a mapping session with Mark Adams using the Tornado chip would not help. I am now at a loss as to how to cure it. I live in Suffolk, is there anyone around here who could help?
