Has anyone any suggestions on a list of 'must have' tools?

I don't think that there are any special tools that you need. A good guide is to carry the tools which allow you to fit the spares that you carry.

Check out the TVR Chimaera Pages touring page. The list there is a bit ott but might give you some ideas.

One school of thought is that all you need is a roll of Gaffer tape and a can of WD40. If it moves and shouldn't then use the gaffer tape. If it doesn't move and it should then use the WD40!

Others adhere to the Mobile phone and the AA/RAC membership card.

I usually carry my electrical kit with me (meter, tape, choc block, pliers, cutters, selection of terminals and cable ties) because the vast majority of breakdown are electrical related and if its mechanical I wouldn't have the parts available to fix it anyway so resort to the AA/RAC recovery system!

Hellfrauds do a little emergency tool kit in a "leather" binder, about the size of a telephone directory, with spanners, pliers, tape, etc., in it. They aren't much money & I bought one for each car. About the only thing I added was a piece of heavy duty wire just longer than the car if I need to carry 'leccy from one end to the other for any reason.

I subscribe to the AA card and mobile phone school of thought. Will install the gaffer tape and WD40 though, sound advice.

Other advice - if it's broke, chuck money at it and the problem will go away. Which then leaves you with another problem. Feel free to use this advice throughout life...

I usually have a selection of fuses and some zippy ties! In fact the only time I have broken-down was in France in my S3c when the throttle cable went, fortunately I was able to tie a loop in the end, whip it with some fuse wire and attach it back to the throttle arm with a zippy-tie Blooming useful things...

I normally carry a bag with a selection of tools - small & large adjustable spanner, 13mm ring spanner, electrical tester, fuses, spare bulbs, cable ties, an old belt, gaffer tape, 1l oil, electrical tape, throttle cable, screw drivers, wire and connectors. Oh and a copy of the bible.

Covers most things you can fix on the move.

I carry 2 lengths - one red and one black (you never know if it is an earthing problem) and a pack of electrical connectors
