Any ideas on this one.

Chimera 4.5 T reg T5 Box

When the car is cold gear change is nice and easy, but as things warm up after say ten minutes of driving it gets harder to change gear, the worst seems to be 4th it will go into any of the gears quite happly but when coming out the higher gears 4th the worst it needs a bit of effort like knocking it with the palm of hand.

It make no difference if going fast or slow, just when things have warmed up. Looked through the bible and you get the opposite if wrong oil has been used and it becomes easier to change as things warmed up, but car has full TVRSH so assume all is correct, what would happen if gear oil was low. Gear box sounds quiet you can just make out abit of noise in the lower gears at very slow speed.

Hi Chris, I had this problem when my Chim was a road car, the box (T5) got more and more notchy throughout a journey. I put fresh oil in at the start of the race season and it seems fine now, so I would suggest an oil change first of all and see if that cures it. Also flush your clutch fluid, the clutch may be dragging a little if you have air/water has crept in over time.

I agree with Iain, mine and some other members have had 'sticking' gears, and all were rectified by changing the oil.

Yep, new gearbox oil in mine cured the some notchiness/stickiness in the gearchange.

Has not done it since.

Hi folks,

This sounds just like my box. Has any of you any tipps on what oil to use, how much oil and how to change it?

Thanks Jens

Experience with other hydraulic clutches leads me to suggest a fluid change as well. The fluid deteriorates over time and miles. Change it as you would for your brakes. If the fluid is poor it can prevent the slave operating fully, therefore not disengaging the clutch and cause the car to stick in gears.

Hi Mitch,

Clutch fluid has just been changed 1000 miles ago at major service.
But thanks anyway for the tipp.
Was just asking about the changing of the oil because I read in the bible somewhere that you had to draw out theold gearbox oil with a syringe or similar?!

Cheers Jens

Taken from the T5 service manual

"APPROVED LUBRICANT. Most T5 transmission models use Dexron II automatic transmission fluid. Refer the vehicle owner’s manual or service manual for lubricant specifications.
CAUTION
Do not mix different bands or types of transmission lubricant. DO NOT USE GEAR OIL IN THE T5
TRANSMISSION SINCE THIS MAY DAMAGE THE BLOCKING RING MATERIAL."

Bit of help here please.

Put the car in to look at sticking gear problem, and they said it was linkage as it has FTVRSH oil will be ok, so they spent hours greasing linkage and exactly the same.

Reading the bible the service list check gear oil and top up, nothing about replacing so I assume the oil is original hence 7 years old, so could do with change.

As its a long trip, going to change oil my self and have a couple of questions. The T5 Box had a look under and there are two bolts to take square tool like an alan key, what size are these as I need to get the tool.

Assume the top is the filler and the bottom the drain, do all T5 have the drain plug as there are references to using a syphon to get the oil out, when filling up should the oil be upto the fill hole.

The diff is it worth changing the oil in that as well while doing gear box, if so what oil is used in that.

The T5 service manual can be found on the Tremac site here www.tremec.com/English/media/pdfs_autogen/T-5_Service_Manual.pdf

Drain from the lower plug, fill until the oil seeps out of the upper plug.
The oil should be changed every 18k according to the TVR Service Schedule
Both plugs are (if memory serves) 1/2" squares so "just" use your ratchet head, a little bit of advice, make sure you can remove the upper plug before attempting to drain, the last thing you need is to drain the oil only to find you have no way of refilling cos the top plug is seized.

There's been a few threads about diff oil, i believe 85w90 is the right one for the GKN (finned) diffs, not sure about the others though.

Checked the oil in the gear box and it's at dripps when opening to plug, so correct level, the oil in the box is Red and very clear no muck. Is this the correct colour of Mobil ATM 220 or has someone filled with wrong stuff.
