My chassis is in pretty good condition other than the outriggers are a bit scruffy like most so I'm in the process of wire brushing and painting etc. If it ever gets to the stage where they need replacing does anyone know how much this costs and whats involved. Would the body need to come off the chassis etc?

Cheers.

I couldn't give you a figure for just outriggers but i had huge sections of my chassis cut out and replaced. Apparently the worst one they had seen. It came to 1200 plus vat but took 7 working days I think.
I'd give offords a ring they did the work on mine and the welding was spot on, a really tidy job.

Thanks for your reply, that seems like a reasonable price for such a big job.

Yeah thats what I thought. Therefore your outriggers should be a fraction of the cost, or am I over simplifying

Might be worth doing a search on here, but from what I know, it is body off - or at least raised, then the work can start. From manhours alone your looking at £2K - £4K.

my 2 pennies worth...

Prior to lifting the body off mine and doing a restoration job I priced up a partial body lift (9 ins), the cost was coming in at around £3.5K + vat this was estimated as they didn't quite know what they would find so estimate nearer £4.5 by the time the job was finished.....by doing this the outriggers will be fine BUT what about the rest of the chassis, chimaera's tend to "go" on top of the chassis near the exhaust manifold....for example

I replaced the chassis outriggers, got it hot zinc sprayed, por'd, hammerited, (Adrain Venn) Big valved refreshed the engine, carbon trumpet base, ported stuff all over the place, 285 piper cam (Castle Race Engine's)braided hoses throughout, replaced all ball joints, track rod ends, gaz gold shocked it (Derek Absolutely Shocks), wheel bearings, gearbox reconned, arm strenghthened, and rose jointed with access hole cut in bottom (Adrain Venn) diff reconned (new quaiffe and seals and cone @ Dana UK), new CV's, new seatbelts, reconned steering rack/ UJ's, loads of stuff chromed, new brake and fuel lines braided hoses, roll over switch on fuel tank etc, etc etc for less than that....but spent about a 1000 hours doing the job and called in favours off mates, posted loads on here, so wasn't painless!

I'd say from looking at other English chassis's of your age,I would doubt the outriggers need to be replaced, however either way you do it,you will need to lift the body, partially or right off to clean them up.
Rust you see from the underside will be twice as bad where the body meets the chassis,as contaminated water cannot drain properly away from the triangular sections.
I'd hesitate against involving pro's untill seeing whats needed, kind of a catch 22 if your not lifting and inspecting yourself.
Don't be afraid of giving it a go,there's plenty of help here, only trouble is,once you start, as Steve has done, it may turn into a project creep.

Paul,

Can't agree more with your sentiments there.

I was pretty much determined to lift the lid off, strip the chassis into major components, i.e. detach each suspension corner and leave it at that and just reassemle it...best will in the world, once you have it all in bits it just makes sense to go through it and do a decent job of it.....thing with my project was that I had time to throw at it, and kept focused, hence November start back on the road in Feb/March..
