Hi Guys, having just got a bargain Chim on e-bay I want to do a full service. It is a 1995 400 and has done 75,000 miles and I reckon Mobil 1 is too thin for it. What do you recommend?
Regards, Robin.

Hi, Welcome!!!
If you look here www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=237643&f=13&h=0 Simon & Guy offer some good advice, but also do remember it's in their interests to sell what they stock, however I guess you get what you pay for.

I know a lot of folks on the Wedge forums use Valvoline VR1 20w50, it's also what I use in my Chim, it's stocked at lots of Autofactors, and it also comes in lower cold viscosities 15w50 and 10w50 if i remember, which would bring it in line with Opieman's recommendations.

Regards
Iain

Tvrobin there is no reason why your 75thou car cannot use the recommended oil if your engine as worn enough to require (slow moving)20/50 then the RV8 must be a load of shit, this isnt the case ive seen loads of RV8,s with well over 100k using a modern 10/40 semi or full syn with no problems if you use a slow moving 20/50 you will just accelerate cam wear problem, these modern oils have much better detergents just what this old pushrod engine needs.unless you,ve got oil burning where an engine rebuild is due soon anyways.just my quids worth.i wouldent put 20/50 in a lawnmower, when theres so many better options for your car.10/40 moves so much quicker, but modern full syn can get used rapidly in these engines,10/40 semi is a good compromise.

I'm changing to a synthetic 10w 50 after much research. Ticks all teh right boxes being slightly thicker tahn 0/40 offerring good cold start up, not too thin, and good heat range. Even Halfrauds are offerring this viscocity now & its made by Exon Mobil too. IMHO o/40 is too thin even for a new or low mileage car, but 20 is probably a bit too thick although used okay by many.
