Hello,

Its been a while but hopefully you can help me. I started the car the other day to try and figure out why it was getting so hot (one of the fans wasn't working and the otter switch had failed). Anyway turned it off again and went to start and then.... nothing.

Fuel pump primes, light goes off on the immobiliser, dash lights work..... turn the key and nothing. It does not even try to turn over. You can jump start the car (no lecturers please) but as soon as you stop and try to restart nothing. This is the case whether the car is hot or cold.

any ideas?

Cheers

new battery time i think, probably a couple of cells gone down. Once old batteries go really flat they often never recover

But everything seem bright and the fuel prime is high pitched rather than low?

Are you jump starting via the battery terminals or further down the line?

Ah! that will be bump starting then. Jumping is using a slave battery and leads which is why i questioned your battery. It could still be battery or something amiss with your starter motor or solenoid i'd start by checking the connections. I havent done it on the chim but you can usually prove the battery and starter by bypassing the solenoid (making sure its not in gear)

Done that and it starts ok, sounds like it is the immobiliser?!

Sounds like the starter motor. I wouldn't expect to hear the fuel pump if the immobiliser wasn't disarming, although the immobiliser could have an internal fault.

Put a relay back in the solenoid circuit(TVR saved £4), it should have one and the dreaded "hot start" can show its symptoms in many ways, not always hot, just lack of voltage to the solenoid. Easily done, usually in the footwell, instructions are available free of charge.

Hi David,

I have tried mailing you through your profile but I have not received a copy of it in my email. Did you get it?

Cheers

Sounds like you have exactly the same problem I had. The immobiliser has more than one circuit (a fuel pump circuit, a starter motor circuit and I think one other). Whilst the fuel pump circuit may work, its possbible (as it was in my case) that the starter motor circuit in the immob has failed. Apparently the full 15amps run through the immob on its way to the starter motor which is about its limit.

Carl Baker replaced the immob (and fitted the hot start kit which reduces the no. of amps running through the immob.) and its worked fine ever since.

If you are useful with a soldering iron you could 'bridge out' this circuit (has insurance implications) to see whether it is this before forking out for a new immob if you're not sure.
