I'm thinking of uprating my coil to a petronix flamethrower.

Does anyone have any tips or experience that may help me.

I believe there are different types of coil from flamethrower.

Any suggestions.

Be carefull with your HT, its not as simple as it sounds. The whole lot works in a ballance including the standard high resistance HT leads and standard plug gap. High performance coils simply have beefier primary windings (to allow more current to be drawn) and more turns on the secondary to produce a higher voltage. The standard plug leads are high resistance only to slow the discharge rate of the coil down, so it does not produce huge amounts of radio interferance (Like the Spark transmitter used in the Titanic !!). BUT If you run low resistance HT leads the coil discharges faster, and also causes more "back emf" in the primary windings that can glitch and ECU or rev limiter. Messing around with the coil "values" can do simular things. There is no simple bolt on coil that can release significant extra power or the manufacturers would fit them. Dont believe the hype !

You'll need an uprated ignition amp to drive that coil. RPI sell uprated amps, but they aren't a direct replacement so you'll need to do some rewiring. If your engine is atandard then there's no reason to need more than the standard coil if everything is in good condition.

Wow!!!

Didn't realise it was so complicated.

Which coil should I have fitted as standard? At the moment I have an old black thing that looks like it came off an old tractor.

Also I like the look of the flamethrower coil in chrome, which looks cool. Can I get the same look from a standard coil?

Standard coil is Bosch PRC6574, probably set you back £40 or so.

Yes you can, the standard Bosch coil which i just bought from www.clevortrevor.co.uk is in steel, but it looks nice and shiny!. Don't wo what I di after connecting the leads and drop it onto the case just below. I quickly scooped it up but not before i was showered in sparks!

If it's a chrome look you want, then just buy a chrome exhaust trim of same diameter and cut the length down, then simply slide it over standard coil.

I think the outside of the boschcoil is aluminum so you should be able to polish it if you like it shiny.

Cheers Jens
