Steve,
I'm going to fit a new cam in my engine shortly, but I'm gathering all the information required before hand.
I would like to know if you have used TDC from the original engine setup or found your own TDC, if so, how with the heads on?
Also did you have to remove the bonnet to get the cam out/in?
Any information welomed.
Thanks
Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul, I'm waiting for the cam to arrive, But have stripped the old one out over the weekend and also taken out the pre-cats as I had some time left over. I did not have to remove the bonnet and you do not need to take the heads off. I took out everything in front and on top of the engine including the main cat, swirl pot and the cross member which the swirl pot bolts to, Cam came out easy. I need to get some more info on timing the cam as somewhere along the line it's had vernier timing gear fitted which looks ok to use again. The timing marks on the timing gear are keyed and marked so at this point it looks relativly easy to set up. On strip down I found four worn lifters and some very slight flat spots on the old cam so hopefully this wil cure that annoying tick. Will keep you posted.
Always go for the minimum on setting preload, i believe 60 thou is too much, at 10 thou this is enough to take up the lash and keep the tappets quiet, on top of this if you ever over rev or have too much oil pressure that will cause the lifter to pump itself up there is far less danger of the valve hitting the piston!
