I have a R/R 4.6 engine with 1 liner thats slipped down. Ive rang an engine builder near to me and he said they will replace the liner for £110 which sounded quite reasonable to me. When i said dont i need to replace all of them he said no. He said he repairs loads of them and only ever does the faulty one.

Would mean a cheap repair...

Any suggestions / advice?

Cheers

Neal , who is this quote with?
And how much did they want for all eight?

I have a complete engine in the garage ,which I bought as a suspect porous block, awaiting build

Neal , is this price for just replacing the liner or fitting a top hat liner?

Chesmonds in Coventry did my pressure testing, even though the block was meant to be good, i had to make sure. Cos if i'd built the thing and it leaked i would have tied it around my ankle and jumped in the Grand Union!!

So, roughly how much is a pressure test?
Is it a matter of pressurising the water system and then monitoring the pressure to see if it lowers, or do they actually look for leaks?

No liner is worth replacing unless it is top hat, its not the liner that leaks, its the block that goes pourous, by fitting top hat liners the block is still pourous but the head gasket and the base of the liner is sealed so no water can get in or air out, only fitting one is seriously false economy, to fit them correctly the block is heated way beyond its running trmperature and the liners are frozen, you just drop the liner in and leave everything to settle, but by heating the block up you could disturb other liners!
