Went out for a spin with Mrs Road-Runner yesterday afternoon down to Surrey. Lovely and sunny when we left London, even had the shades on.

Whilst we were near Guildford it started to rain torrentially, 19mm according to the Met Office. It was so heavy that we couldn't see further than 5m, so we pulled over under some cover and waited for it to pass. After a while it eased so we set off to get home pronto. However, on the way to the M3 in really slow traffic it kicked off again. The road flash-flooded in minutes, as the nearby river burst it's banks, and swamped the air filter. Needless to say the engine cut out with water in the induction.

So there we were stranded in a rapidly growing lake. Got out and pushed to relative safety and awaitied the RAC. Water kept rising so had to keep pushing up the pavement. Another 5 'normal' cars suffered the same fate too. After 6 hours got taken to Fernhurst. Now waiting for the prognosis. I'm praying!

Thought i'd suffer my misery with you all. First problem i've had in 8 months of flawless ownership of a 70k veteran.

Anybody else had a water problem?

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Water can FUBAR an engine if sucked into the combustion chambers as it doesn't compress and therefore bends things. This is worst case though, hopefully yours will just be an electrics issue or something. Good luck!

Thanks.

Pretty sure i've got water in there, however, both the RAC man and Fernhurst made me feel a bit better by saying what a robust engine RV8 is. I hope it's strong enough to take on mother nature!

I had the same in London coming away from the Polo at Guards.

Lucikly high revs and my manic waving, and Lydia shouting out the window kept everyone out of my way as Poser made a swim for it.

A bit of a splutter after we emerged and no sidelights - we were off up the M1 back to normaliltiy.

Good fun though. Had to do it again shortly after further up the road.

Getting Ian to service her (if he can) this week to be on the safe side. Plus get him to check out the electrics.

PS...the tide marks are just under 1/2 way up the doors..! how she didnt die in the middle I will never know.

I wish my little swim had been as fun!

Graham at Fernhurst has just called me; the engine was completely flooded, airfilter collapsed and oil contaminated.

They managed to drain it and replace oil and plugs (both only 4 days old having been serviced on Wed!) and she's now running. Graham says she sounds as if nothing's broken, however, not running properly as airflow meter is screwed. The investigation continues.

Anybody know about replacing with an uprated airflow meter; Jag maybe?

Northern Ireland Service agent, Greg Connolly of Torque Flyte (sound bloke) suggested (and I agreed) lifting and fixing the air filter up higher in its compartment. His arguement was that even lifting it up six inches can make the difference between water being sucked in with much expense and hassle and getting away with a drive in an unexpected flood. Took five minutes to fix it up higher - could be done at your next air filter change perhaps?

Greg is Mr TVR in Ireland - I've heard nothing bad about him.

Spud - where abouts in Dublin are you? I'm in Leopardstown with the Chim this week.
