I know its a very difficult question to answer because you have to take into account age, postcode, yawn, yawn, etc, etc. But what are insurance premiums like on a Chimera 450 or 500 ?? Can you get a classic car policy to cover them yet ?? Anybody whos 37, lives in BN13, owns a Chim and has max NCB may be able to give me a fairly accurate quote ??(and take me for a spin !!)

Regards,

Simon.

Simon, I believe the car must be 10 years old to be covered under 'Classic', -- dirt cheap then!
My cover was £420 for 43yr old living in Bristol!! , and with limited milage.

Hope this helps

I dont think that there is a difference in cost due to engine size. Fromm my experience the 4L, 4.5L and 5L all cost the same.

Simon, the car is FANTASTIC - I think it's been living inside an Oxygen tent for it's 8 year's, goes better than my 'old' Cobra with considerable more luxury. Just waiting for the weather to break and plan a couple of day's Camping with the car Should get to know her really well then!!

I recently bought and insured a lovely Chim 500. I'm 33, with full NCB, based in south devon with car garaged so probably vaguely comparable.

I pay about £700 for comprehensive cover including business use for myself, up to 16000 miles per year. Interestingly adding my wife dropped the price by about £300/year, even though she can't reach the pedals!

I did run a few quotes before buying and found that on regular policies the 400's were about £100 cheaper than the 500's, although as has been said if you look at classic policies the car itself won't make much difference.

Mine is garaged, limited 5k miles per year. I'm 26 with full NCB and I pay £650, but that is for essex. you could always try confused.com for an idea. Although they are normally on the high side by about £200 for me.

That might strictly be true, but the main "classic" issurers will treat Chim's as "future classic".

My 1999 4.0 Chimaera was on a Future Classic policy with Classicline, 3 years ago!

However, pick the company wisely and they may mirror any No Claims from a daily driver - combined with low miles and you might beat the "classic" policy rates.

My 99 Chim is now on limited mileage of 3000 miles with Mannings (TVRCC) and this years renewal has just come through at the same price as last year £339.

I rang round, and no-one else can even get close.

I am also looking for insurance on a 97 Chimaera 4.5 and would ideally like it on a future classic policy.

I am awaiting quotes from Heritage and A-Plan. I assume you have to be a TVRCC member for the Mannings quote? Anyone else worth a try?

Hello again, yes, you have to join TVRCC to get insured by Mannings.

Instead I strongly recommend you try the broker I've used for the last few years. Details here:

Yep I agree with the above. Speak to Darren, did me a great deal on my '97 400. You do need to have a main car registered for every day use though.

Many thanks for the Hagerty recommendation - almost fell off my chair with a £253.40 policy on a 1997 450, 3k limited mileage but ability to increase at any stage and inclusive of breakdown cover!!!

All others were between £550 and £900!!!

I have to recommend A-Plan:

see thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=256657&f=23&h=0

They have just saved me £270 on my renewal from Classic Line.

Classic Line insurance renewal was £700 for 5,000 limited miles per annum.

A-Plan was £430 for unlimited miles, protected no claims, and courtesy car, etc, etc...........

I'm 35 and live in a dodgy area just outside of Cardiff.

If they ask if you've had a quote already or have had a renewal quote - deduct £200 and I guarantee they'll still beat it.!!!

Good luck thumbup

I've just renewed my Chimaera 500 with Mannings for £400-ish. Late 30's Policyholder + spouse, Class 1 Business Use, unlimited miles, ungaraged, full NCB, 6 points in the last 5 years (but only 3 of them 'live' - hurrah) in Hampshire.

Did get a small discount for being a member of the IAM though, which was a bonus.

Note: ClassicLine will not touch you unless your car is used for pleasure ONLY - no commuting whatsoever and certainly no business use. So that's them stuffed for my business then.
