Hi out there,

My diff is making a noise at acceleration/deacceleration. It is a GKN type.

Now I read here on some thread it can be the type of oil used in the diff.

Did anyone had the same experience?
Did the noise (clunks at sudden acceleration/deaccelleration) vanish when other
oil was used?
Or did it require a complete rebuild of the diff?

Thanks & cheers,

Paul

Check the diff mounting bushes are in good condition and the mounting bolts are secure. If the bolts are loose then you can damage the diff casing which gets very expensive.

It is not related to any of the bushes. The noise is clearly coming from within the diff itself. When holding a screwdriver agains the casing and listing while you are under the car, the noise is clearly coming from inside.

That sounds rather ominous, and I doubt that a simple oil change would fix it.

this is exactly what happened to mine, over a couple of months the whine got worse. In the end I had to get a new diff, I paid £750 (a lot I know) but this was for a brand new one - 2nd hand was £450 plus vat from breakers! Try John Reid at Readman Racing, really helpful guy. He posted out to me then got Leven to fit. As soon as this was done the car was totally trasformed....

Is this something which happens both to GKN's and BTR type of differentials or only the GKN's.

They're basically similar construction and will suffer from wear and tear in the same way.

Are they not the same diff as a Sierra?

Hi,

Sorry to hear of your dilema, I can't confirm if this is the same one as that fitted to a sierra, but I very much doubt it as when I had my GKN diff reconned I was told that the GKN diff was fitted to TVR's and one of the Masserati's, that essentially the diff was the same on both aprt from the input shaft parts.

I you decide to go for the recon route I can recommend the folk that rebuilt mine they replaced all of the seals, the cone?, and quiaffe for less than figures I have seen quoted here.

Drop me an email if you want, good luck eitherway,

Oh just one other thing obvious I guess, but if you do go for taking the diff out, replace all 3 of the diff mounting bushes. I replaced mine went for a poly bush on the large one and all appears to be good no road noise to speak of + thats having a roll cage in it too.Might be an idea to check the CV's too, and do the fuel filter at the same time!
