can anyone tell me if the ventilation fan located in the drivers footwell should operate at 3 different speeds ? The switch under the dash has 3 settings, but mine only works on the slowest speed is this a fault or a "feature"

You're not getting mixed up with the switch on the transmission tunnel, just left to your left leg?

This chooses between air recirculating or not- hold it down and you should hear something moving deep in the innards.

I've never heard of a 3-speed ventilation switch under the dash though!

There is definately a 3 speed switch ( exactly the same as the fan switch on the dash ) on the right of the steering column under the dash, this operates a fan in the drivers footwell that blows air not via the heater to the drivers footwell and the fresh air vents under the radio. seems unlikey that they would fit a 3 speed switch that only operates on the slowest speed. I should say that this is a 1995 car and i believe this was dropped on later models. does anyone know if this is a fault or intentional.

I've got one of these three speeders on my '94 chim - the handbook says that it supplies air to both vents, in fact it only seems to supply three speed air to the driver's vent on my car.

I have got three (fairly similar) speeds though. Most of the air blows onto the back of my right hand when holding the steering wheel.

I tried it out for a week or two when I first got my Chim but then forgot about it as the occasions that my right hand got sweaty enough to need three speed cooling were infrequent.

Perhaps if selling we could call it 'climate control' and truthfully state that not all Chims have this feature?

Mine has 3 speeds settings (although 1 & 2 are the same so probaby one or the other aren't working) and blows cool air to:-

1 the driver's footwell
2 the 2 vents in the centre console and
3 the vent on the driver's side of the dash.

The passenger side dash vent is supplied hot air when the heater fan is on - annoying really as, when it's wet, the passenger window clears fine but the driver's side often mists up.

Mine's a '96 btw.

The general feeling is all 3 speeds should work. having removed the fan and switch I only need to confirm which is the faulty componant. enter Pete the auto electrician.
PS
If anyone else is considering removing the fan, think twice its a complete b______d

.....bit late on this. Mine is a 94 and I have 3 discrete speeds. Mine blows cold air (only) to the flappy vent in the r/h footwell (N - I - C - E) and the r/h dash vent. I don't have any centre vents.

After removing the r/h dash vent (to get at the nut holding the dash top in - which wasn't there!) I discovered I had no speeds. Somehow I'd pulled a wire off the switch when jiggling the vent hose through. Found the wire and (after two attempts!) found the correct terminal and I'm back with all speeds.
