Have never heard of a short shift cosworth g/box option myself, but the sierra cosworth also uses the T5 box,so perhaps it's had one fitted after the original packed up?
The T5 came to be fitted as standard from 94 or thereabouts,i know you can get them on pre-serp engines too.
All TVR quoted figures on BHP are much higher than real world, and you will find lots in the search on hear relating to this-expect 200 real BHP or thereabouts, depending on the rolling road used.
Personally i think 9k for a '94 4.0l @ 48k miles isn't particularly cheap,but it's always worth paying more for a minter.

Thanks for reply..don't really know what he means actually. I was presuming that he was getting his wires crossed and is mistaking the fact that Cosworth used the box as well..
If the original has gone I thought it would have been replaced with a Borg Warner..

£9k for even a mint 1994 is way overpriced based on the current market for used Chims - haggle hard!

The Cosworth version doesn't fit as it has a different output shaft. TVR supply their own remote linkage so that the gear lever is in the right place so... I think the owner has his wires crossed.

If it is a genuine HC model BHP should be 230-240.

On the coversation of gearboxes again...the owner says he was told at a TVR meet that you could have a Cosworth gearbox as an option in the HC model,he believes its still the original box from manufacture so..I am still confused..but if it is..does it matter if it runs..??

i thought the serpentin HC had the standard T5 box, wots wrong with that?the rover dosent need mega close ratio,s it as not got a narrow powerband.the T5 seems fine to me.

I've been told many things at TVR meets... doesn't mean they are true...

The Cosworth gearbox is in fact an inferior version of the box used by TVR. I have most of the factory docs etc and there is no mention of a Cosworth gearbox option. There was a changeover from Rover to the T5 box but it wasn't an option... TVR just switched them over. They didn't use the Cosworth version but the WRC one.

Does it matter? No providing the seller isn't trying to get more for the car because it has the special options which aren't. If the reverse is upper left it is an LT77 box. Lower right, its a TVR. There is a buyer's guide which has most of the key events in the model history on my website. www.tvrbooks.co.uk

How did it go Ian?

For info TVR changed from Rover Vitesse G/B to BW "T5" during 1994. Mine was registered April 94 and has a T5. Ford (and others) did use this gearbox as it copes with high torque demands. Input/output shafts to suit........

BTW I didn't think it was too high a price. I think it's wrong to inflict excessive depreciation on our own models. Keep the prices UP I say!

the Dodger..
Agree need to keep the cars value best as poss..especially when selling of course however I am sure you will concur that to keep their 'Marques' the enthusiast has an obligation to maintain it to best standards as people will get wrong idea about the car.
I believed it could have been better..it had top end ticking during acceleration which will prob be the gaskets..I thought the interior was a bit tired, chassis seemed fine but I don't believe it had had any maint to it regards preservation 'waxoil'which for a 94 I thought should have been done, the rear window also had a tear..but in general and aesthetically it was o.k. started no probs, everything worked, and of course sounded awsome and went great..maybe I am too picky..still its fun looking and deliberating isn't it.?
Cheers for reply

Ian, see (and feel) as many as poss. You're right about enthusiat's obligation to maintaining the Marque to the Best Standard. From this seller's knowledge on gearboxes and your observations it's clear he is not doing his duty.

Sure, the car may come alive with a bit of TLC and an exhaust gasket - but you probably did the right thing. Always buy on condition.
