My mechanics are running out of ideas as to what is making my 450 Chim's top end noisey! It started 2 months ago when I fitted a stealth cam and we're not sure if the mechanic set the preloads as he buggered off back to Oz! We then decided to check the preloads and found them to be slightly out so I was recommended to get some adjustable push roads and reset the preloads to between 20 and 40 thou. I also changed the oil for a slighly thicker consistency. It still isn't as quiet as it should be so after a few further questions we were advised to set the preloads to between 50 and 80 thou which we're planning to do tomorrow....does this sound ok or can anyone think of anything else which might be causing the top end noise!?!?!?!?!

We have checked for leaking manifolds as was suggested earlier but it's not this!

Cheers

Did you replace the rockers? I had a tappety noise that Racing Green diagnosed as one or more soft rockers ('99 450 18k miles). Certainly much quieter after replacement. Difficult to diagnose noises on a website - unless Ted would allow embedded audio files

Sometimes the cam just doesn't suit the engine,if its a high performance high lift cam this can take it beyond tollerance and you get a tapperty top end. This will forever annoy you as you listen to it all the time plus maybe oil circulation issues.Try if you can going back to a more standard cam profile.
hope this helps

This may sound silly but are you certain it is the valve gear ? I had a noise that everybody diagnosed as hydraulic lifters not priming correctly. After a lot of head scratching it was the bearing in the belt tensioner. Slip the belt off and see if it still does it.
