whirring noise.... any ideas

engine is makinga kind of whirring noise like something is catching, a type of squeaking. it happens even at idle
dont know much about engines, but it sounds like something is coming loose and catching?
any ideas michael

Lift the bonnet and see where the noise is coming from. Be wary of the hot and/or moving parts.

checked it and it seems to be coming from the front where the belt and all the flywheels are, the belt didnt seem lose nor did any of the flywheels

If it sounds like a regular ticking noise then it may be a stone trapped in the belt. If not, get a friendly auto mechanic to have a listen.

Had that on mine, replaced the V-belt and problem cured.
When the belt wears it doesn't neccesarily mean it will feel loose.

the belt looks very new, how long would it take to wear and whats the damage if it goes whilst driving?
