I have just found out that the 99 4L exhaust of a very good friend is much louder (more TVR in other words) than my 2001 5L. To be honest since I have bought this 5L I never heard the exhaust note I heard so many times in England. Have TVR changed / soften the exhaust after 2000????? If so, how can I revert back to the true TVR exhaust sound?
You can do quite a bit.
Remove the Pre Cats will change the sound.
Fitting a different exhaust system. Generally the options are:
1). Get the perforated pipes in the exhaust replaced with either Cherry Bombs or Sleaved Pipes.
2). Change the exhaust system to a Cherry Bomb System or a Sports system.

Funnily enough, a previous owner made mine 'louder' and, whist I love it, I actually prefer the original note when I hear it. Each to his own!
I agree, I still have all the cats and baffles in mine
It is loud enough to make people notice but not tiresome on long journeys.
