First,
Thankyou to everyone who offered advise and assistance on getting my car legal in Austria. I emigrated to Austria and took my 1994 Chimaera 5HC with me. I now have a nice set of new Austrian plates and maybe the one and oly 5HC in Austria (kept my GB sticker though ). Amazingly I didn't have to change anything on the car, not even the lights. The biggest pain was getting the information needed on the forms.

Secondly,
I was rather lucky when I had the car in the UK in that I lived lose to Bispham and bought it new direct from factory, the car has been TVR factory serviced all its life, first by Mark (remember him? No longer with TVR but was selling cockles on Blackpool sea front last I saw him.) and then by Heath. They and their team(s) were v.good to me and my car but now I'm out in Austria I have to do everything myself and no dealer support either; poor old me I never really poked around the inards of my car before but now I'm armed with the 'Bible' I have begun to do one or two jobs myself. Heath still advises me over the phone though, which is good of him.

Now to the main point. My tacho for some time has been playing up. It has taken to not reading anything for the first 10mins of a drive. I have checked all the connectors I can find and even had the dash top off but so far I can't find a reason why it started doing this. After 10mins of driving it fires back into life and appears normal. Sometimes this is preceded by small flucations well below the actual rpm for a minute or so. Heath reckons I may need a new tacho if I can find one; and he is usually right. Has anyone any ideas on what I should try next before looking out for a new tacho with mint green dial. I have magnecore leads and a fairly new coil. I did notice the leads coming off the disie are not in the best of shape but the engine runs smoothly. I'm not sure were to source a new connector from? TVR Power maybe?

Thanks,

m4rk

I believe there is a TVR Garage at Dachau outside Munich (www.tvr-deutschland.com/impressum.html)

Looking at your profile you seem to be based around Villach - probably still a bit of a drive - But hey I've done Munich airport to St Johann im Pongau whilst driving a Mini Bus in 2 hours so in a TVR you should be able to do it from Villach in less driving

Hi M4rk,

happy to find another TVR owner in Austria. Vienna is not nearby, however good to know there is some company.

The tacho gets its feed from one of the two square plastic resistors that come off the negative side of the coil (the other goes to the ECU to tell it the engine's running).

It could be that this resistor is either on its way out, or has a loose or corroded connector. I also believe the feed is sensitive to interference from the HT side of the ignition circuit, so check the HT leads are sensible positioned away from the signal wire to the tach.

M4rk,

there is another TVR mechanic South of Vienna in Brunn am Gebirge. His name is Valenta. He has spent many years with TVRs a substantial number of which were his own. I trust he will know how to tackle TVR problems with expertise. He is also into racing. But as I heard he does prefer Porsches now. If you want to try his service just google for valenta & brunn & kfz. If not successful I will retrieve his telno. for you.
