What's the best fuel additive to try and where do they sell it (ie. Halfords or garage) ? - for a late '97 Chim 500. Running not so good so will try the leads, plugs etc but wanted to give the fule additive stuff a try too.
Thanks in advance !

Whoa. One thing at a time or you won't know what the cure is.

Have a butcher's at SHPub's bible - quite useful for this sort of problem.

I've just put some Millers VSP Plus in my Golf to increase the octane - but thats because its on a rolling road today and the higher the octane, the further the timing can be advanced and the more power I get before the engine pinks.

Assuming your timing is set properly now an additive will not help the problem - I would check leads, distributor cap, timing, spark plugs and engine management in that order.

thanks, guys - will try the leads etc first tonight and may come back to you if all of that seems OK. Have got the bible - will study it more ! She's off for a service next week but doesn't seem to run right at the moment - ok accelerating but when I take my foot off the gas and it drops to around 2000 revs, she pinks and splutters a bit. Happy again when I put my foot down.

Used my bible for instructions on how to clean stepper motor last night - filthy ! Initially made a difference but still having idling problems this afternoon. Since temp gauge is still running cool will now be using bible to investigate this !
As a new chimp owner, and a girly (!) I really do appreciate this site - thanks for the advice to date...

How cool? Cooler than 65 deg on the gauge? Anything above this should be no problem (well, up to about 95 deg - before someone posts...). As to additives - nah. Seek purity thru meditation instead

she used to run at 70, going to 90 in traffic. Last week or so, been struggling to get to 50, then slowly makes it to 60, then 70 absolute tops. Previous threads have pointed me to the themostat - the bible has some tips on testing this with a cold engine so will do this tomorrow. She's off for a service on wednesday so hopefully she'll get sorted then.
