Is it particularly noisey where you are?

Could be all sorts of things - best get a good diagnosis and save yourself a wad, rather than trying all sorts of fixes including a new coil

Hi there,
If the rev counter is jumping at the same time as the engine is miss firing it sounds
to me like you have a problem with the coil or the low tension side of the ignition circuit.
The rev counter pulses are taken from the low tension side of the coil, so I would have a good look round the spade connectors at the input to the coil and the ignition amplifier plug.
Disconnect each spade terminal and clean with emery paper and replace.
You could also try running the engine with the bonnet up in the dark as this may show any problems with HT side of ignition with a nice firework display of sparks.

Coil costs about fourty quid and the ignition amp quite a bit more.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers.
Paul.

My old 400 used to miss, thought of all sorts of things it could be, turned out to be the bit between the plug and the lead (whatever it is called) there are so many things it could be though

I had this problem when I bought my Chim, the last thing I done before the problem disappeared was to move the ignition king lead,it was making contact with the swan neck from the coolant tank and shorting out.Is the car missing completely,or just down on a cylinder?

Hey - no problem! I thought maybe I'd forgotten to turn on my hearing aid!
