Rear Brake Excitement
Discussion
Was last week disappointed to have the Chim fail its MOT
on rear brake pad thickness. Stupid, as could easily have checked this pre-test and saved myself £45, but nonetheless...
Got some new pads and went to fit them this weekend (with the wind back tool and everything!), only to discover that some muppet had installed the inboard offside pad wrongly with its locating peg misaligned with the piston
. Grrr. Hence pad has been wearing on only half its area, and there is a 1cm ring of rust on the disc where it's not been being swept. Also, of course, this pad was pretty much down to the metal at its inner edge while all the other pads had 3-4mm left in them. Now this is all irritating enough, and I've replaced all the pads now since I was at it, but I'm more worried that I have not changed the rear pads in the two years I've had the car, and in that time it has had a major service at a well known TVR main dealer (who failed to notice the unswept disc area or poor pad fitment), and then a minor service at an indy who is also generally well thought of. Am I being over-demanding to think that this might have been spotted?
At any rate, gripe over! I now need some new rear brake discs for a 97 4.5 Chim, which has the vented variety currently. I understand that these are 273mm diameter, but does anyone have any idea what the offset is, and indeed where the best place to source some might be? I already attempted to get some via the interweb, but they sent me some surprisingly different discs, and I am not entirely convinced by the quality...
Thanks for any help!

I upgraged my brakes to the EBS carbon ceramic, I got them from A to Z motor spares who were very helpful.

Thanks... That site looks pretty good.
I'm still finding it difficult to discover the exact specs of the rotors though... I'm reluctant to remove one of the existing ones as I need to be able to drive the car! Of course, the suppliers should know this, but once bitten an' all that.
The loss of a good indy is always a shame... I've been very happy with mine up until this, and it now makes me wonder whether everything else has been dealt with as well as I'd thought... Ho humm.
