I have a 1996 chim 4.0 HC. My diff is chewing itself to pieces. The diff has cooling fins on the bottom and the filler plug at the back. Do I definitly have the GKN diff?? What car is the diff originaly from?? I'm very short on money, can only just afford to run the car, can anyone recommend the best route to go dowm??

The GKN is the finned variety and as far as im aware they're Austrailian imports and not fitted as standard to any UK based car other than TVR's. Occasionally they pop up on eBay.

The GKN is fitted to one particular Maserati apparently, but probably rarer than a TVR one.

Suggest speaking to breakers,(althought its hard to guarantee one(a diff that is))

Relatively speaking I dont think its that expensive to get it refurbed.
Unless the crown wheel and pinion is shagged.

Most people go to Bernie the box, cant think where he works now though, think its Milton Keynes.

I brought the car as a project. Rear diff could of been noisy for X amount of time. Didn't realise it would be this much hassle. How much roughly would a refurb be??

monkey276 it might sound terrible, but it may need nothing more than a set of bearings dont panic,if the pinion bearings have collapsed it will sound terible & terminal, but seldom does it wipe out the crownwheel and pinion unless you have ignored the noise for to long.a good transmission specialist should be able to repair no problem, the good thing about bearings are there rarely unique to the part there fitted to and normally fitted to a number of other units, hope this is of use...good luck.

Another source of outstanding skill for all elements of transmission (with TVR experience) is Hardy Engineering. Definitely worth giving them a call - I know that they are not nearby to you but give them a call if you're still having problems.

sure it's the diff ?

I've been down the diff rebuild route, and more recently thought I was having a repeat performance; turned out to be a wheel bearing.

more info on my Forums section on profile.

My diff is on it's way to Competition Transmissions (Gearboxman) as we speak; he reckons the average bill is around £350 + VAT. Bellhill had some in stock when I spoke to them, but they wanted as much for a salvaged one as it would cost for a guaranteed rebuild.
