Just an idle thought. While the space behind the front seats in Chimaeras (and Griffs, Tuscans and I think other TVRs) is extremely useful e.g. for luggage, dogs and making sure any rear speakers are a reasonable distance from your head, what's it actually there for? Why not leave it out and make the car smaller? Is there any good engineering reason, or is it there largely by accident and/or because TVR owners find the extra interior space useful for the above reasons?

... it's because the Chimaera doesn't have a glovebox for storage...

Well if you are tall, and slide yor seat all the way back. less space.

As for the actual - parcel type shelf space, well see where the rear wheels are in relation ship to it.

If the space wasn't there you'd have to climb over the rear wheel to get in and use the roofstay for a headrest.

The Chim is built as a tourer. Not much good if there's nowhere to put your luggage when the boots full of roof etc:

The shape of the tub is dictated by the shape of the chassis and running gear, under that raised area is the diff and rear suspension. Some sports cars do have the rear bodywork coming up virtually to the back of the seats but usually there is some space here for the roof to fold into. I guess its ultimately down to styling and i think TVR got it about right.

I've had pretty girls from 17 to 27 in there...

Isn't that what it's for??

NB it was all on private roads as it's very dangerous and illegal to more than one passenger in a Chimaera.

Its an empty space aft of the seat and forward of the axles, and may as well be used for something - and in the absence of a proper glovebox, I'd say it was just right.

I thought it was a place to put the dog.

My lurcher and her bed fits perfectly.

ideaIf there's anyone out there from Leven reading this, you're missing an opportunity here.

The Leven TVR Dog Seat.

A hand made bed that fits snugly behind the seats in a durable tweed material, colour to match the Wilton or the leather.

Or even a full racing harness that attaches to the roof stays; to enable your faithful hound to sit upright at 130 miles per hour, rather than cowering with her head behind the seat.

Leven Dog Gogglescool; frames finished in brushed aluminium with a discrete TVR logo............................Hmmmmscratchchin.......now we're talking.

You read it here first.

Are we all talking about the same space? A lurcher in those cubby holes - has it been cremated?

Ah - the OP if referring to the parcel shelf; my mistake.

In that case, if you look under the car (you did do that before you bought it - didn't you? eek) you will see the reason(s) why its there. Work inwards from the wheels. I'm not convinced a TVR with a 4x4 type elevated driving position would be an enormous seller.

Anticipating the next question: it's where the main chassis ladder lives, and the car would fold in half the first time you pressed the loud pedal if the central tunnel wasn't as big.

As you'll see from my profile I haven't got one yet. I'm currently saving up my pennies towards a deposit and hope to be in the market in the New Year. However, rest assured I shall both look underneath it myself, and get someone to look under it who knows far more than me what the underside of a TVR should look like.
