Without being too obvious, maybe something catching in the fan?

Could be the bearings in the fans. Be careful if it is. Mine seized causing the fuse to blow on the other fan, result overheating. Perhaps you could disconnect the fans individually when the engine is hot to see if the noise goes away.

Does it continue after the fans have spun up, or just as they start? As the fans start, they draw an enormous current that drops the battery voltage slightly. This places an enormous load on the alternator. As this is new it may be where the noise is coming from.

Thanks Andy, Do you reckon the new alternator will "bed in" or shall I get it checked?

If it is the alternator, not one of the fans, it would be worth taking it back to the alternator supplier to let them have a listen. But unless the noise develops I wouldn't bee too concerned about it.

Perhaps it's the secondary fan that's keeping the hamster cool on his little wheel.... confused
