I use a Cheetah rear view mirror detector... really good and not obvoious. Plus only £200. Always rates as one of the best in performance too...

They're ALL just about to become highly illegal - get one quick and hide it away from prying cop eyes.

No they're not - just those that rely on radar/laser detection. GPS based systems (e.g. Road Angel Classic will still be legal)...

Indeed. And can anyone guess whether the mobile tax vans will increase, or will it be the fixed tax collectors they use?!!??!?!?!?!?

Yes they are...I said DETECTORS (ie RADAR) Not "Maps" (ie SAT NAV). a GPS System IS NOT a DETECTOR.

Right then, you walk into your local friendly automotive store and ask them for a speed camera "map". I reckon you'll be pointed towards the AA Road Atlas...

Sat Nav plots your position on a DIGITAL "map" stored in the device. There is no "Detection" going on. The OP was:

I stand by what I said, ALL detectors are about to become illegal. All "map" based systems will be OK

Detecting where YOU are is not illegal. Detecting where the speed cameras are will be....

I currently use a Tom Tom sat nav and have downloaded database from net which also includes locations of any temporary and common mobile locations that the police use. Can be updated very easily online so that always up to date.

How do you find the navigational features? I'm looking to pick up a sat nav machine next year...

An extract from the Department for Transport (DFT) website "The Government will not be prohibiting those devices that rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to warn drivers of published camera sites or posted speed limits, as these compliment the Government's policy to ensure that camera sites are visible and conspicuous to drivers, and so help deter excessive and inappropriate speeds on the roads."

To me, this explanation justifies the use of detectors too - I can understand why they want to ban radar jammers, because they actually prevent the cameras from doing their PUBLICISED job - slowing people down at danger spots (rather than the less publicised job of turning a few quid) - but in this respect, detectors are no different to GPS based devices that detect your location and relate it to that of a known camera's location.

But the bottom line is that GPS based systems informing you of camera locations are not going to be banned by this particular bit of legislation. Have a look at the wording of the bill (Road Safety Bill 2006) itself:

18

Speed assessment equipment detection devices

(1)

In section 41 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (regulation of construction, weight, equipment and use of vehicles)—

(a)

in subsection (2), at the end insert— “speed assessment equipment detection devices.”, and

(b)

in subsection (7), at the end insert—

““speed assessment equipment detection device” means a device the purpose, or one of the purposes, of which is to detect, or interfere with the operation of, equipment used to assess the speed of motor vehicles.”

GPS-only based camera "detectors" are not banned by this legislation, because they don't detect cameras - they detect you, and relate where you are, to a static database of cameras. So, in theory, my Snooper S3 neo will be legal, but I'll have to stop using the S100 RLD laser detector that plugs into it... incidentally, both very good bits of kit!

PS you think this is scary, have a look at one of the bits of legislation they tried to put in but had to remove to get the bill passed - "(1) A Vehicle Data Recording Device ("VDRD" is a device which records such data relating to the progress and manner of driving of a motor vehicle as the Secretary of State may by regulations prescribe." and "(6) A person commits an offence if he uses a motor vehicle of a class which the Secretary of State has, by regulations made under subsection (3), designated as a class of vehicle to which a VDRD must be fitted, and that person knows, or has reasonable grounds to believe, that the motor vehicle—
(a) does not have a VDRD fitted; or
(b) has a defective VDRD fitted.

PS I'm not disagreeing with IM - just saying that sat nav isn't the only way to stay legal. Just as well, I was unimpressed with the camera database I got for my Garmin i2 recently, it contained tons of cameras that had long been removed, more than 9 out of 10 alerts were false alarms - on my Snooper, even with the radar detector plugged in, I'd say 1 in 10 are false alarms.

My snooper geo is legal because as said before it uses satilites to pin point my position in relation to static cameras. It also shows danger zones where the scamera vans park at regular intervals. On the other hand my wifes snooper detects the cameras, and only bleeps and flash`s if the camera is active, this is why they are banned they do not mind you knowing they are there but they do not want you to know weather they are on or off, for obvious reasons furious.
