Just have a search through this forum and you'll see that yours is quite a common question. Apart from that, buy the bible from Steve Heath (Publications website) and enjoy. Mine went about 12 months ago and I still miss it.......hopefully will be back in the fold soon though!!

Steve Heath's site also has a useful checklist (which is in the Bible) on what to look out for. Usual advice though - don't buy the first one your see; buy on condition etc. (otherwise you can get stuck in the 4.0 vs 4.5 vs 5.0 loop); get along to a local meeting and view as many as you can; speak to owners to find out what things really are a case of 'they all do that sir' and what things should make you run away screaming; consider an inspection of 'the' car before purchase as a couple of hundred getting a respected indie to view the car could save a whole lot of money later on. And of course enjoy!!!

Go drive one, only then will you truly realise why people buy, own and love them.

I've been lucky enough or miss trusted enough for some mates to let me drive their's, they must have been mad. silly and yes i'm hooked. Whats realy doing my head in is where to buy one, when down talking with dealers (Hexham and Boroughbrige) they make sence when explaining that they add a grand or two on as they pre check / service the cars which i understand because they are in it to make money and i don't blaim them for that and John Waggitt at SSCC seemed to provide value for money with peace of mind as he offers some garantee, option two is through the clasified, argggggg the pitfalls ( The question is the real reason for selling? ) or bad/good old EBAY, sertinly bargins. Some say never sell or buy from a friend if you want to keep your friends but is it a good idea to buy from within the TVRCC??????wobble

Aaaa think i'll just need to get reading, talk someone in the know to come with me and spend my money.

You could always get Rob Ingleby to search one out for you. He also does an inspection service only and I think will travel just about anywhere (www.findasportscar.co.uk/).

Just go for it, live with the 'consequences' later, feel the V8 force, and have a permanent grin.

If it is any comfort - I have been through exactly the same agonies and have just bought a 450 privately (and ultimately saved myself quite a wedge over the dealer prices).

My philosophy was talk to as many people as I could (mechanics and owners) about the pro's and con's (of 400 vs 450 vs 500 and the different specs) look at loads and buy the one that 'felt right' ... bit of science (condition, condition, condition & service history) and a bit of gut feel (combination of the owner and the car)...and if that was from a dealer then so be it. However, in my recent experience...it is very definitely a buyers market and buying privately makes a lot of sense....if you have seen enough cars and read all there is to read on PH (as a knowledge bank it is unbeatable) and talked to enough owners...I am reasonably confident that you will be able to spot the 'iffy' ones when buying privately...and if there are one or two thing not right about the car that is in every other way 'right' - then the money you will have saved can be put towards sorting them out (and you will still have change).

For me, being involved in choosing my own was a big part of the fun...take it from a new boy (albeit a risk manager!) - you will not regret the plunge!

Thanks for all the advice, thats one of the great things about these cars, the people who drive them.

I know what you meen about if it's right you just have to go for it, I'm an engineer and like things to be in good working order but yes, there is the savings on buying private and the fun of getting a car that can be worked on and made just right. I've read loads on Piston Heads and surfed loads n loads of clasifieds. I'm like a kid in a sweety shop.lick But the garage is getting gutted this weekend, got a big skip coming, i've looked out the strip of carpet to get pined to the wall to protect the door edges, i'm sure you've all been there.
