Seriously considering a sports exhaust conversion David Batty style, on a '97 Chim 500 - concerns over neighbours objecting to the noise, however. (Garage in a courtyard setting....great reverberations !)

Has anyone had the DB conversion which I understand is a little different to usual dealer convert. I'd love to have a listen so if anyone in Surrey/Hants/Berks is willing to start their engine for me, let me know.

Cheers

I'd also like to see / hear that as I have exactly the same situation as you! Dave B normally looks after my Chimaera 400 for me and I leave my house (in a courtyard) at 6 in the morning every day! If you find one or get the work done i'd luv to have a look/listen.

The noise is fairly awesome with a complete straight-through. Any competent motor engineer can remove your exhaust and replace the perforated tubes with just 75% straight through and 25% perforated---still gives great sound but better for long journeys (and the neighbours). One more point--you can tune a little by using slightly smaller diameter tubes in the silencer hence avoiding loss of torque through reduced back pressure. Alternatively one of Tim's induction kits has much the same effect--preferably multiple throttle.

I've got the "Cut open box and re-weld straight thro pipes" Sports exhaust mod done by Fernies. If that’s the DB mod then I’d have it done. This mod was done by Fernies during my wait for it pickup week. Can’t really remember what it sounded like on my test drive, as the overall feeling of driving my first TVR was a bit much to take in at the time.
The sound is “suits me sir” It is louder that the standard exhaust but WTF it’s a tuned V8 after all.
Was at VW last week end parked next to Mike_e in his 4.5 Cerbi we both started up the pre warm prior to leaving, and both Mike and his son Ryan commented that mine even on tick over sounded .
It is, more poppie and bubbly on overrun but it suits me.
I haven’t as yet had a DB meter on it, so I don’t know at what levels it pumps out, I just know that she sounds superb IMHO.

I'm around a few meets locally, if you want a listen drop me a line, we may be able to arrange to meet at one of them.

Big Al..

I had the 'chop the bix open and remove the baffles' conversion done last year, and having had the car for 4 years I can tell you that the improvement is WELL worth it. Sounds bloody fantastic, but not so loud that you can't track your motor. no discernable reduction power / torque either. Cool.

I think I'm looking shortly at the Offord Special - a bit of scaffold pipe welded in place. £120 or thereabouts ...

Gonna see if they have one down there I can have a listen to when they service mine or know anyone who's had it done who are local to me - I think davidd had it on his Griff - but that's long gone I believe.

He's making a proper noise now in a Cerb.

I know Marshy recommended it.

My Grif has a sports exhaust although I don't know who provided or fitted it, as it was on the car when I bought it.

I'm live in north east Hampshire, you're welcome to come and have listen. Email me via my profile if you're interested?

Rako

PS It does sound Fantastic!!
